Amir Khan spoke to Spinbit and believes Terence Crawford will become a ‘super great’ and defeat Canelo Alvarez.
I: Canelo v Crawford – if Crawford wins is he one of the greatest of all time?
AK: I believe what he has said there because Terence would be doing something not a lot of people could do and being such a great champion like Canelo, you have to hold your hands up and say he is one of the best out there. Canelo is so good at what he does and is such a superstar, not because of how great of a fighter he is but he is such a big name in the sport. Everyone wants to fight him, he is that PPV star so that adds up. Terence isn’t really that PPV star yet. I don’t think he has hit the PPV market the way he should have. In my opinion, he should have because he is one of the best I have ever seen. He punches perfectly, and I’ve been in the ring with the guy, he is amazing.
Some fighters need that flamboyant style and a bit of fun to sell a fight, but Crawford is a straight shooter and doesn’t care about the numbers. But if he did have that Canelo or Floyd Mayweather attitude, he’d have made a tonne more money and would be an even bigger name. Canelo is the superstar going into this fight, but you can’t look past Crawford and say Canelo will win this fight easy.
I think Crawford has his number. He is a big welterweight and when I was sparring with him, he was so big, thick and strong and was hard to push away. He is fundamentally a great fighter, but his body structure is very heavy, and he hits hard so it’s not like he is going to be outweighed by Canelo. I lean towards Crawford because he is a bit fresher and has a lot more left in him which can get him the win against Canelo but let’s see. I could be wrong but that’s how I feel. I have seen Crawford fight, even against Israil Madrimov, he still has the speed, power, reaction times and keeps stepping up. He is a great but wants to become a super great. Even when he fought Errol Spence, people thought it would be close, but it was a one-sided fight and he f****** destroyed him’. Then he moved up to 154lbs and got the win.
