Not only can you unwind after a stressful day but there are also benefits you can receive while doing yoga. Whether you want to lose weight or become more flexible you can achieve those goals by practicing these yoga poses.

    Why Yoga Supports Whole-body Health

As previously mentioned you can burn calories by increasing your heart rate while performing yoga. Your body will be challenged as you go through each pose allowing you to become more limber as well.

Your body will thank you if you continue to work out with yoga. Not only will you gain more flexibility but your overall health will benefit as well.

There are many ways you can work out with yoga but these are some tips to keep in mind when practicing.

What Makes a Pose Effective for Weight Loss?

Some yoga poses will allow you to burn more calories than others. If you are looking to lose weight focus on poses that involve using larger muscles. Poses that will make your body work harder and allow you to move from one pose to the next.

If you're able to flow from pose to pose with no time in between you can build up your endurance. You can also practice deep breathing which will help with staying focused on the workout rather than rushing through it.

Any pose can help you lose weight if you put the proper amount of effort into it.

Downward Facing Dog to Build Strength

Downward facing dog is a great pose to help you build strength in your upper body. You are working your arms, core and legs while lengthening your spine. This pose can be held as a resting pose or to help you become stronger.

By holding this pose you can learn to breath while working your body.

    • Push down through your hands spread fingers apart
    • Push your hips up towards the sky and lengthen your spine
    • Keep a slight bend in your knees
    • Work your heels towards the ground
    • Maintain steady breathing and don't sink into your shoulders

You can build strength and lengthen your hamstrings by practicing this pose frequently.

How Do Warrior Poses Help Fitness?

Great poses to create heat. They require concentration, balance and leg strength. Warrior's can also stretch the hips and open up your chest. While standing tall with controlled breathing.

If you're looking for a more sporty approach to your yoga practice these will be beneficial to you. Building stamina in the legs and keeping your core engaged.

    • Take a lunge stance with strong legs
    • Make sure your front knee is over your foot
    • Extend arms out and lift your chest
    • Core engagement but don't clench
    • Even breathing on both sides

By holding these shapes you will begin to feel more comfortable and able to do more advanced poses that will build strength.

Chair Pose for Heat and Stamina

As your legs get worked in chair pose you will be strengthening many of your muscles. Thighs, hips, calves and abs all play a role in this pose. Although it may seem easy it will take some effort to hold the pose.

When you need a shorter more challenging pose to build up your body's temperature. This pose can help you. Another benefit is it forces you to stay in proper alignment while using your muscles.

Since there are so many muscles being used you can burn calories in this pose as well. You will increase your endurance in other poses if you do this pose often.

Why Flexibility Improves With Regular Practice

Your muscles become more flexible when they are being stretched in a healthy manner. Yoga can do this by working your muscles while stretching them out. Which will help you gain more flexibility.

Let’s explore how regular yoga practice impacts flexibility with measurable results.

Body AreaEffect of StretchingNotable Improvement TimeframeRecommended Poses
HipsIncreased range of motion4-6 weeksPigeon Pose, Butterfly Pose
ShouldersImproved joint mobility3-5 weeksCow Face Pose, Eagle Arms
    BackReduced stiffness4 weeksCat-Cow, Sphinx Pose
HamstringsGreater flexibility6 weeksSeated Forward Fold, Downward Dog

By understanding these details, you can focus your practice on areas needing more flexibility and see consistent progress.

After you have been doing yoga you may notice your body is able to stretch further in certain areas. Your hips, back legs, shoulders and back will start to open up. By continuing to do these stretches you will begin to see your body become more flexible.

Practicing will also allow your body to become comfortable with certain poses. Allowing your body to relax in those positions will help you gain flexibility as well.

    Bridge Pose for Posture Support

This pose will help with your back. Opening the front of your body including the hips and chest. Good to do if you sit all day and feel like your upper back is hunched over.

You don't need to have any fancy balance or know how to do high levels of yoga. Bridge pose will help strengthen your butt, back of leg and core muscles. A great pose to add into any practice for an overall work out.

    • Come lay on your back with feet shoulder width
    • Drive through your feet and lift your hips off the ground
    • Make sure your knees are pointing up and out
    • Only clasp hands together if your shoulders allow for it
    • Lower down at a controlled pace

You can do this on its own or add it to a sequence to strengthen your body. Can help with your posture and feel more open in your upper body.

    How Does Yoga Reduce Stress?

Yoga helps relieve stress by allowing your body to move and control your breathing. By moving your body while controlling your breath can help quiet the mind. It also tells your body to relax and release stress.

Breathing out slowly can help your body relax. You will begin to think less and not feel as stressed. Your body may start to unclench your jaw and take deeper breaths.

Relieving stress isn't just going to happen when your doing yoga. It will help you when your going through stressful situations in your day to day life.

    Child’s Pose for Recovery

Child's pose can be used when you need a break from more advanced poses. Or if your having a long day and want to relax. It can stretch your lower back and allow you to slow down.

Taking time to recover is important in your practice. If you don't take time to recover you will find yourself burnt out from doing too much.

Allow yourself to breathe freely while in this pose. Don't force your breath and let your self go into this pose. It will make your practice more enjoyable.

    Building an Effective Yoga Routine

Mix poses that challenge your body and relaxing positions. By doing this your body will stay active and you will not burn out. Work towards strength, flexibility and feeling peaceful and confident in your body.

Begin with short routines. Incorporate poses that require you to stand on your feet. Poses on the ground, pose that work your abs and allow yourself time to breathe. Once you have more energy extend your time practicing.

Find poses that can help you reach your desired outcome. If your goal is to lose weight be flexible feel relaxed and be healthy find poses that can help you achieve these.
