Pokémon GO is still going strong a decade later. Over the years it’s received tons of new features and improvements. It’s also gone through some major behind the scenes changes, such as the recent acquisition of the game’s developer Niantic, now operating under the Scopely brand
This week, Video Games Chronicle had the chance to speak with Michael Steranka, Vice President of Product at Scopely. Steranka had plenty to say about the future of the game, mainly that there would be a bigger focus on community, including the live events which have been successful in the past
While Steranka says that they won’t be messing with the game’s core mechanics such as throwing balls and catching Pokémon, they are looking to improve on other areas of the game, including the gym system, and the “out-of-phone experience”. You can see what Steranka had to say about the game’s next stages below
“We’re deeply looking at the Gym system and how we can improve upon that. We haven’t really touched it in many, many years. I think those are important points of interest around the world that can do a better job of becoming this gathering spot for communities to help people connect with each other.”
“I think for even the most diehard minmaxxers in Pokémon, they deep down also really love and appreciate the out-of-game experience that they get with Pokémon Go. So for us, what we’ve always been talking about, now even more than before, is what is that out-of-phone experience that we’re creating for people?”
“It’s easier said than done, right? Because what does that even mean? We only have control of what’s happening in your phone. But we also have the ability to help people discover things around them, and that is endless; that’s not filling your Pokedex. Exploring the world is an endless objective.”
