A Tasmanian Kmart shopper got a lot more than she bargained for when she bought a $19 item for her kids

Shanae Brown recently took home what she thought was a cheap three-tier bookshelf from the retailer, which was meant to keep her sons’ messy room much tidier

However, when she opened the box and saw what was inside, she couldn’t believe her eyes

The perfectly-packaged box contained wooden planks and rusted circular saws instead of the bookshelf components

“When I saw the snapped wood, I thought the item was broken, and was disappointed,” Shanae told Yahoo Lifestyle

She said the Kmart she bought it from wasn’t close to her home and was worried returning it would end up becoming a “hassle”

“But then when I opened it further and realised it had saw blades in it,” she added

“I was grateful I was opening it while my kids weren’t at home, as worst-case scenarios ran through my mind.”

On the left is what should have been in the box, but on the right is what was in the mum’s package.

It’s unclear whether another customer pulled a shifty move to save $19 by buying the bookshelf, putting various items in the box, and then returning it, or if it was simply a warehouse mistake

But Shanae said if someone truly wanted the bookshelf, they would have at least kept the screws to put it together, as they were still inside the original box she bought

The Tassie mum said she spoke to a staff member she brought the box back, but had not been offered an apology for the potentially dangerous mistake, and had received no further communication from Kmart

Yahoo Lifestyle understands Kmart is investigating the incident and has reached out to Shanae

Shanae is far from the only one this has happened to

When the mum posted about her shocking find on social media, it became very clear that this isn’t an isolated incident

“That happened to me. We got a lawnmower from Bunnings and took it home, and it was full of books,” one said

“I used to get this all the time as a retail manager, only took one or two before we started opening every return that came in. Most people blame their partners,” added another

“I bought a vacuum at Target, and when I got home and opened it up, it had been used. It was full of pet hair and dirt. I took it back, got a refund, and went elsewhere, as I wasn’t risking that again,” wrote a third
