Mandeville police have arrested a former Crunch Fitness employee accused of photographing women inside tanning booths at the facility without their consent
Nathan Volz, 27, was taken into custody approximately two weeks ago on a count of video voyeurism, police said. Volz has since been released on bond, but police say he could face re-arrest if additional charges are brought
Police said Volz may have photographed up to 10 women without their consent, and authorities say there may be additional victims
An attorney representing one woman, Chelsea Dazet, said after consulting with affected people, she believes the alleged crimes occurred between March and June. Dazet said her client was unaware she was involved until she received a call from the authorities
“Someone had reached out to her,” Dazet said. “I guess they recognized her photo, and they asked her to come in to verify if this was her, you know, a victim of the crime.”
A woman who regularly uses the tanning bed at the gym said she has contacted authorities out of concern that she may also be a victim. Fox 8 chose not to identify the woman
“I’m just in a holding pattern waiting to (hear) back (from) the detective,” she said. “I think we’re always vulnerable really in these types of situations, but I’m not going to stop tanning because he’s caught, and hopefully they put measures in place that would prevent this from ever happening again.”
Other gym members said they were caught off guard by the news
“I was actually just leaving here, and my mom texted me she was talking about some dude taking pictures of ladies in the locker room or something. I was like ‘holy crap I was just there,’” said Brent Steib, who works out at Crunch Fitness
Another gym member, Dre Fournet, said:
“It’s disturbing. It’s sad to see that people are like that.”
Crunch Fitness said in a statement that it immediately fired Volz after learning of the allegations. The business said it is cooperating with law enforcement
Police are urging anyone who believes they may have been targeted to come forward
