Danny Glover Is Turning His Alzheimer’s Journey Into Advocacy

Beloved actor and activist Danny Glover is opening up publicly about living with Alzheimer’s disease at age 79, sharing that the diagnosis has brought both difficult moments and flashes of clarity. In a recent interview with People, Glover described the emotional challenge of recognizing changes in his memory. “I’m still not accepting in my mind all parts of it,” he admitted

Simultaneously, he says he was still able to hold tightly to the parts of himself that remained steady, including his sense of purpose, family ties and treasured memories. According to the report, his daughter Mandisa first noticed changes in 2022, and he was later diagnosed in 2023. Even as he and his family adjust to the reality of Danny Glover’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Glover’s message is not one of surrender. It is one of adaptation, support and continuing to find meaning in daily life.

Does Danny Glover have Alzheimer’s disease?

Yes. Danny Glover has confirmed that he has Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, language and the ability to carry out everyday tasks over time. In his People interview, Glover spoke candidly about trying to make sense of what the diagnosis means while also staying present in the life he still has. “I don’t feel like it’s the end of my life,” he shared. “There’s work to do.”

His daughter and brother have also shared details about the family’s experience caring for him and noticing changes in his memory and storytelling. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but each person’s symptoms and progression can look a little different. Glover’s story is putting a public face on a disease that affects millions of families

    What’s happening in your body

Alzheimer’s disease changes the brain long before symptoms become obvious. According to theMayo Clinic, abnormal proteins called beta-amyloid and tau build up in the brain. These changes damage nerve cells, interrupt communication between brain regions and gradually shrink parts of the brain involved in memory, language and decision-making.

That helps explain why someone may remember a childhood story in vivid detail but struggle to hold onto a recent conversation. Glover captured that tension in his own words in an additional People story. “There are the moments that you keep remembering that validate the fact that you can remember stuff,” he said. “And there are moments I’ll never forget.”

    Causes of Alzheimer’s disease

Doctors still do not know a single cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, experts believe it usually develops from a combination of age-related brain changes, genetics, health conditions and environmental or lifestyle factors.

TheNational Institute on Aging explains that age is the strongest known risk factor, but aging itself does not cause Alzheimer’s. Research suggests the disease begins years before symptoms appear, as protein deposits build up and brain cells become damaged

Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and low physical activity may also raise risk. In a small number of families, inherited gene mutations can directly cause Alzheimer’s, usually at a younger age. For most people, though, the disease seems to come from a complicated mix of biology, health history and life circumstances rather than one clear trigger

    Health risks and complications

Alzheimer’s is not just about forgetfulness. It can impact safety, independence and overall well-being. As symptoms worsen, people may have trouble managing money, taking medications correctly, driving, eating enough or recognizing unsafe situations. Later stages can lead to poor nutrition, dehydration, falls, wandering, infections and trouble swallowing.

The disease can also cause mood and behavior changes such as anxiety, agitation, depression, sleep problems and social withdrawal. These complications matter because they often place heavy stress on both the person with Alzheimer’s and the family members caring for them. Over time, Alzheimer’s can become a full-body health issue, not only a memory disorder. That is one reason early diagnosis, routine medical care and caregiver support are so important for long-term quality of life

Dr. Diana Rangaves tells Blavity Health, “Understanding the early signs can feel overwhelming for families, especially when subtle changes begin to affect daily life. Recognizing symptoms early allows loved ones to seek medical guidance, plan proactively and ensure that appropriate care is in place before challenges escalate.”

    Is Alzheimer’s hereditary?

Sometimes, but not usually in a simple one-to-one way. Most cases of Alzheimer’s are considered “late-onset,” meaning they develop later in life and are influenced by a mix of genes, aging, health and environment rather than one inherited mutation. Still, family history can raise a person’s risk, and rare forms of early-onset Alzheimer’s can be directly inherited

With Danny Glover’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, the first warning signs were subtle, not dramatic. His daughter Mandisa told People that her father had always remembered astonishing details, but then “pieces were missing” from stories he used to tell perfectly. “The history of my dad is that he remembers every single thing back to 1970 … But that changed,” she said. Her description is a reminder that hereditary risk is only one part of the story; loved ones often notice the earliest real-world changes before a diagnosis is made.

What to do about Alzheimer’s symptoms

If memory problems, confusion, language changes, or trouble completing familiar tasks begin to appear, the first step is to get evaluated rather than brushing them off as “just aging.” Alzheimer’s cannot currently be cured, but treatment and support can still make a real difference. A doctor may recommend cognitive testing, blood work, brain imaging and a review of medications and other medical conditions to rule out treatable causes of memory loss

Depending on the stage, treatment may include medications that temporarily help symptoms, newer anti-amyloid treatments for some eligible patients, counseling, occupational therapy, home safety planning and caregiver education. TheMayo Clinic andthe National Institute on Aging all stress that early planning matters. It gives families time to understand the diagnosis, organize care and protect the person’s dignity and independence for as long as possible

    When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you or someone close to you notices persistent memory loss, repeated questions, getting lost in familiar places, trouble following conversations or personality changes that feel out of character. These symptoms do not automatically mean Alzheimer’s, but they do deserve medical attention.

The Mayo Clinic notes that several conditions can mimic dementia symptoms. These include vitamin deficiencies, medication side effects, depression, thyroid problems, sleep disorders and other neurological illnesses. That is why a formal workup matters. The earlier a doctor evaluates someone, the sooner that person can receive the right diagnosis, start treatment if appropriate and make decisions about long-term care and health

What is the final stage of Alzheimer’s?

The final stage of Alzheimer’s is severe dementia. At this point, the disease has affected much of the brain, and a person typically needs around-the-clock help.

According toMayo Clinic’s overview of Alzheimer’s stages, people in the late stage often lose the ability to hold a conversation, recognize loved ones or move around safely on their own. They may need help eating, bathing, dressing and using the bathroom. Swallowing problems, infections, falls and weight loss become more common. Even so, moments of connection can still happen through touch, music, familiar voices and comforting routines. The late stage is emotionally hard for families, but supportive medical care can help preserve comfort, safety, and dignity.

    Bottom line

Danny Glover’s decision to speak openly about Alzheimer’s disease matters a lot. It gives the public a fuller picture of what the illness actually looks like. Alzheimer’s is progressive and life-altering, but early evaluation, medical treatment and strong caregiving support can still improve quality of life. Glover’s story reminds readers that a diagnosis does not erase a person’s history, gifts or humanity. It changes the road ahead, but it does not cancel the life that has already been built or the relationships that still hold that life together.
