Kabushenga tips men on life and wellness

Kabushenga encouraged participants to seek financial advice from qualified professionals rather than relying on opinions from friends or social circles. He said responsible spending and making informed investment decisions are key to building financial stability

_______________Businessman and former Vision Group Chief Executive Officer Robert Kabushenga has urged men to practise financial discipline through budgeting, saving and investing consistently, saying these are essential for long-term financial security and peace of mind.Kabushenga made the remarks during the Men of Steel Life and Wellness Conversation held at Uganda Baati last week.He encouraged participants to seek financial advice from qualified professionals rather than relying on opinions from friends or social circles. He said responsible spending and making informed investment decisions are key to building financial stability.

The discussion explored a wide range of issues affecting modern men, including managing workplace pressures, financial responsibilities, family expectations, physical health and emotional wellbeing. Participants reflected on the realities of balancing demanding careers with meaningful personal lives while recognising that resilience is strengthened through openness and mutual support.”In order to deal with mental health pressures and stress, and even work-life balance, please don’t get misled by the artificial life you see on social media,” he said. His message comes at a time when many Ugandans are struggling to cope with financial pressures. According to the FinScope Uganda 2023 survey, funded by the Bank of Uganda through Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSD Uganda), nine in every 10 Ugandans experienced an unexpected financial shock. The report shows this is more than three times higher than in 2018, pointing to growing economic vulnerability among households. The survey also found that seven in every 10 Ugandans spend more than they earn. Many now rely on family members, friends or loans to cover their monthly expenses. About 20% turn to friends for financial support, 16% borrow money, while 21% cut their spending to make ends meet.Uganda Baati Head of Human Resources Amon Aruho said many men choose to suffer in silence instead of talking about the challenges they face, yet this often affects their wellbeing.
“We think because we are men, we shouldn’t speak about what is bothering us. Most people keep everything to themselves, yet silence is one of the biggest killers. We are good at hiding what we are going through, and that is hurting many men,” he said.Aruho said providing for one’s family is a responsibility that every man should take seriously.”Being a man is not a privilege; it is a responsibility. We have to be there for our families. What you do here is what supports your home. When your family is well provided for, your mind is at peace, and the pressure becomes easier to manage,” he said.Uganda Baati Chief Executive Officer George Arodi encouraged employees to make use of the company’s Wellness Centre, gym and relaxation lounge, saying good health and wellbeing should never be taken for granted. The session comes at a time when employers across the world are investing more in employee wellbeing.According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), depression and anxiety cost the global economy an estimated US$1 trillion every year in lost productivity, while research by Gallup, a global analytics and advisory firm, consistently shows that employees who are engaged and supported are significantly more productive than those who are not.
