India’s Sri Lanka squad to be confirmed with injury cloud looming

India’s squad for the upcoming two-Test tour of Sri Lanka is set to be finalised and announced by Tuesday, July 28, with several fitness concerns likely to shape the final composition of the travelling party

Much of the pre-squad chatter centres around pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, whose availability is under close watch ahead of the announcement. Bumrah had to skip India’s decisive third ODI against England at Lord’s after picking up an impact injury and subsequent swelling in his left knee

    Aeing tracked carefully

“We are monitoring his recovery process. The Test series is still some three weeks away, so he has enough time to recover and join the team in Sri Lanka,” the

Ultimately, he remains subject to fitness clearance, with plans for him to rest until July 30 before reporting to the Centre of Excellence for further assessment

Several other names also carry question marks over their availability heading into the tour. Washington Sundar has already been ruled out of the series opener, with his participation in the second Test dependent on how his fitness progresses

Sai Sudharsan’s inclusion also hinges on fitness, though early signs point to a positive recovery trajectory. Meanwhile, Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy have both been ruled unavailable for the tour altogether

Jadeja set for comeback, spin attack takes shape

On a more positive note, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is poised to return to the Shubman Gill-led squad, having last featured in an ODI against New Zealand back in January. His all-round capabilities are expected to prove valuable against a Sri Lankan side that will look to exploit turning conditions

In terms of the pace attack, duties look set to be shared among Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, fitness permitting. The spin department, meanwhile, appears headed toward being led by experienced campaigner Kuldeep Yadav alongside left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who impressed on debut against Afghanistan recently

Washington Sundar, who picked up a four-wicket haul in the second innings against Afghanistan at Mullanpur, could round out the spin trio, with left-arm option Harsh Dubey expected to remain the backup slow bowler in the squad

A crucial selection meeting scheduled ahead

India’s recent overseas record against quality spin bowling makes this Sri Lanka tour more than just a routine assignment; it’s a genuine test of whether the batting unit has actually addressed its longstanding vulnerabilities on turning tracks

Bumrah’s fitness situation adds another layer of complexity, since his absence would place considerable pressure on a pace unit already managing rotation concerns

Jadeja’s recall feels like a smart move given the conditions expected in Galle and Colombo, offering both control with the ball and depth in the batting order. Ultimately, how India balances experience against form, particularly in the spin department, will likely determine whether this tour becomes a genuine confidence-builder or another difficult lesson in unfamiliar conditions
