Mitch McConnell provides health update, new photo as rehab continues

    Updated July 27, 2026, 2:43 p.m. ET

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell will miss the upcoming 2026 Fancy Farm picnic, a staple of Kentucky politics, as he continues to recover from a fall last month at his residence in Washington, D.C

In a July 27 release, McConnell said he is still “working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders.” He was initially hospitalized on June 14 and remains at a rehab facility, according to a statement from the U.S. Congress’ Office of the Attending Physician

The Fancy Farm picnic, where elected officials and candidates in upcoming races traditionally give rousing speeches to energetic crowds in West Kentucky, is scheduled for Aug. 1. McConnell’s statement noted that while “there’s no place (he’d) rather be on the first Saturday in August,” he will be unable to attend the event this year. It would have been his final appearance as an elected official at the event

“When I first attended forty-two years ago, Fancy Farm was a pretty lonely place to be a Republican. But, my, how times have changed,” the release from McConnell said. “Today, western Kentucky is a conservative Republican sea of red. So I hate that I’ll miss the fun this year, but I’m sending my best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful picnic.”

The statement from the Office of the Attending Physician said physicians are meeting with McConnell daily to discuss “all aspects of his rehabilitation care.”

“Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls,” the release said. “His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.”

The emailed release from McConnell’s office included a photo of the senator and his wife, former U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, dated July 26

McConnell has not been seen publicly since he was admitted to the hospital last month and has not given any interviews in that time

A number of critics on both sides of the aisle have called for more transparency about his condition in recent weeks — after being hospitalized on June 14, the senator did not make any public statements until a July 12 release that said he had sustained “minor injuries” after a fall at his home. He admitted at the time to being guarded about his condition due to “the vulnerability that comes with growing older.”

An evaluation after the fall determined McConnell had no fractures, cardiac abnormalities, stroke, tumor or hemorrhage, according to the July 12 statement. He was “briefly unconscious” before being hospitalized, he said. Emergency services dispatch audio released weeks after his fall indicated medical personnel were called to his residence the morning of his fall to administer CPR

McConnell, 84, is not running for reelection and will leave office at the end of the year. U.S. Rep. Andy Barr is the Republican nominee to follow him in the Senate, while Charles Booker will represent Democrats on the general election ballot in November

McConnell has been a fixture at the Fancy Farm political picnic for decades. At last year’s gathering, where speakers often skewer political opponents in front of a raucous crowd, the senator spoke for several minutes about gains Republicans have made throughout Kentucky during his time in office
