Beginning October 1, 2026, some Washington residents will lose Apple <a href="https://healthylife7.com/bilimeters-now-in-every-sanford-health-sioux-falls-clinic/” title=”Bilimeters now in every Sanford Health Sioux Falls clinic”>Health (Medicaid) coverage because of changes in the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1)

People who may lose coverage include some non-citizens, refugees, asylees, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petitioners, and survivors of human trafficking who do not have lawful permanent resident (green card) status

Children and pregnant people will continue to qualify for Apple Health regardless of immigration status if they meet all other eligibility requirements

Losing health insurance can have serious consequences, especially for survivors who are receiving ongoing medical or mental health care, taking prescription medications, or managing chronic health conditions

If a survivor’s circumstances have changed — for example, they have moved, changed contact information, or recently received lawful permanent resident (green card) status — they should update their information with Apple Health as soon as possible. They can report changes through the Washington Healthplanfinder

Even if someone is no longer eligible for Apple Health, they may still qualify for another program. Depending on their situation, they may be eligible for:

    • Coverage related to pregnancy or the 12 months after pregnancy
    • Emergency medical coverage for certain serious medical conditions
    • Other health care programs through DSHS
    • A qualified health plan through the Health Benefit Exchange

    How advocates can help

If you are supporting someone who is losing Apple Health coverage, encourage them to connect with a Washington Healthplanfinder Navigator or Tribal Assister. These trained specialists can help people understand their options, apply for other health coverage, and determine whether they qualify for another program

You can find Navigators by county and statewide Tribal Assister contact information here: [insert link]

For a brief overview of these changes and possible coverage options, watch the King County Public Health interview below (starting at 2:13)
