Public health officials are warning people not to eat certain frozen burritos sold at Costco stores in Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota because of incorrect packaging that could result in a severe or life-threatening reaction if eaten

The Food Service Inspection Service issued a public health alert for boxes of Red’s Steak, Cilantro and Lime burritos Wednesday. According to a letter sent to Costco members, some boxes “inadvertently” contain breakfast burritos made with egg — a known allergen — but that’s not what is stated on the label

The problem was discovered by a consumer who purchased the products and realized some inside contained eggs, and that boxes were mislabeled, the FSIS said

The three-pound, green and white boxes were sold in the frozen sections of Midwestern Costco stores in Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota only. A list of product lot numbers printed on packages can be found here

The burritos are no longer sold in stores, but they could be consumers freezers, the FSIS warned. The burritos should not be eaten and instead thrown away or returned

“Out of an abundance of caution, please do not consume the product if you have a sensitivity to egg, since it might contain an undeclared egg allergen,” the letter to members said. “Please return the item to your local Costco for a full refund.”

No confirmed reports of adverse reactions have been reported, the FSIS said

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists egg as one of nine leading causes of food allergies in the US. The FSIS and the US Food and Drug Administration both have laws that require all ingredients of food products, including allergens, be listed on the label

“For those who are sensitive, a reaction can occur within minutes or hours, and symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening,” the CDC said
