Mich. (News 10) -A 56-year-old truck driver and social media personality known as the “Goofball Trucker” is partnering with the Lansing Lugnuts to promote weight loss awareness and fight the stigma of obesity

Alex Waldrop, who says his top weight exceeded 600 pounds, has made Jackson Field his platform for a public weight loss journey he calls “Lose It Loud.”

Waldrop wears the number 325 on his back — not a traditional baseball number, but the number of pounds he says he needs to lose to reach his goal weight. He has already lost 245 of those pounds through movement and moderation

“This is my number, this is who I am, and hold me to it,” Waldrop said. “Lose it loud.”

The phrase is also the name of a website he created that allows people to choose their own weight loss number and make it public — building accountability through transparency

“If I’m going to keep it a secret, then there’s no accountability,” Waldrop said

Waldrop traces his self-described food addiction to a traumatic childhood marked by a lack of food and mental anguish. He says baseball has long served as an escape

“It’s literally just been an escape for me forever,” Waldrop said. “It’s just my happy place.”

His weight loss journey began around the weddings of his two daughters. At his first daughter’s wedding, he said he could not fit into a rented tuxedo. At his second daughter’s wedding, after spending $1,000 on a custom-made suit, he said he reached a turning point

“I was all alone in a dressing room trying to get ready for her wedding, and it literally was rock bottom,” Waldrop said. “I’m like, I can’t do this anymore.”

He made a promise to himself that day: “When my son gets married, I will fit into a tux like him and everyone else.”

Lugnuts General Manager Zach Clark said the team began following Waldrop on social media before reaching out to form a partnership

“We were watching his stuff on social media, we were laughing and having a good time,” Clark said. “He’s really kind of taken on a life of his own here in the ballpark.”

Waldrop gives behind-the-scenes tours to kids, signs baseballs, and was recently tapped to promote the team’s new massive Hubcap Burger on social media

“In the old days I ate the whole thing,” Waldrop said. “Now I had a quarter of one.”

Waldrop has launched what he calls the 3-K Club — a post-game walk of 1.8 miles around the concourse at Jackson Field. He says any fan who wants to walk is welcome, and he will provide a ticket

“As long as they want to come back and walk, they’re going to have a ticket,” Waldrop said

He has also written a book titled Food Addiction Is Killing You, in which he addresses obesity directly

“You can take all the medication you want, you can have all the surgeries you want — if you do not cut the food addiction, nothing’s going to work,” Waldrop said

Now less than 100 pounds from his goal, Waldrop said the process requires patience and honesty

“I didn’t get 600 pounds overnight, I’m not going to get 225 overnight,” Waldrop said. “There’s a process, but if you trust the process and you’re honest with yourself, change is possible.”
