Qantas, Australia’s flagship airline, aims to usher in a “new dawn of travel” with the launch of the world’s first direct flights between Sydney and London and later Sydney and New York, which will feature the world’s first dedicated in-flight “Wellbeing Zone.”
The carrier first announced plans for the record-breaking flights under the code name Project Sunrise back in 2017, with a goal of connecting Australia’s east coast directly to major international destinations
“Project Sunrise gave us the opportunity to rethink the customer experience across the entire journey, and the ‘Wellbeing Zone’ is one of the biggest innovations in the cabin design,” Sarah Udy, Qantas executive manager of product and service, told Newsweek

The Sydney-London service is scheduled to begin in October 2027 and expected to cut up to four hours from current one-stop journeys. The Sydney-New York route will be launched at a later date. Flights will be operated by specially modified Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft capable of flying more than 16,000 kilometers (around 10,000 miles) non-stop for up to 22 hours

Qantas’ Wellbeing Zone arrives as airlines increasingly experiment with new ways to improve the long-haul passenger experience
Recent innovative designs and concepts have included ultra-private business and first-class suites with sliding doors, personalized cabin lighting designed to reduce jet lag, AI-powered onboard digital services, and new cabin layouts that create dedicated spaces for passengers to work or socialize during ultra-long flights
Airlines including Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa and United have recently unveiled next-generation premium cabins focused on greater privacy, comfort and well-being, reflecting a broader industry push to make long journeys less physically taxing

Project Sunrise comes at a challenging time for the anked to continuing unrest in the Middle East
According to a July report from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global air passenger demand fell 1.7 percent in June 2026 compared with June 2025. Willie Walsh, association director general, said the decline was driven largely by weaker domestic markets in China, the United States and Japan, alongside subdued international demand for Middle Eastern carriers
Meanwhile, a May 2026 report from the U.S. Travel Association said total travel spending in the U.S. will reach $1.37 trillion in 2026 and $1.42 trillion in 2027, with international inbound travel expected to return to growth

Groundbreaking Design
The Wellbeing Zone has been made possible in part because of the aircraft’s unusually spacious layout
Qantas’ A350-1000ULR fleet will be configured with just 238 seats across four cabins, making it the lowest-density Airbus A350 configuration in the world. The reduced passenger count provides more personal space and created room for the dedicated wellness area, the airline told Newsweek
While many airlines have introduced premium suites, upgraded business-class products and improved cabin air systems on long-haul routes, Qantas says it is the first airline to create “a purpose-built in-flight Wellbeing Zone.”

The initiative reflects a growing focus across the industry on mitigating the physical effects of long-haul travel through better cabin design, lighting, sleep management and wellness programs
The aircraft themselves have been specially manufactured for Project Sunrise. Each features an additional 20,000-liter fuel tank that enables ultra-long-range missions. Qantas is expected to receive a total of 12 A350 aircraft, the carrier said

How Much Will the Project Sunrise Flights Cost?
Qantas has not formally announced fares for Project Sunrise
However, Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace previously told Executive Traveller that tickets are expected to carry about a 20 percent premium over current one-stop services
According to Executive Traveller, that could equate to one-way economy fares beginning around AU$1,600 (about US$1,130), while first-class suites could cost more than AU$14,000 (around US$9,885) one way
Wallace said customers have historically been willing to pay a premium for direct ultra-long-haul services, pointing to the strong performance of the airline’s Perth-London route
Tickets for the inaugural Sydney-London Project Sunrise flights are expected to go on sale in February, ahead of the route’s launch in October 2027
