Mich. (News 10) – Potter Park Zoo’s African lion, Kota, is off exhibit after being diagnosed with severe spinal disease, zoo officials announced Thursday
The 19-year-old lion began showing signs that something was wrong over the past several weeks, including a sudden decline in appetite and mobility, according to the zoo
Veterinarians evaluated Kota before transporting him to the Michigan State University Veterinary Medical Center for a CT scan and an upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examination. Test results confirmed he has severe spinal disease, a condition the zoo said is common in geriatric large cats
Kota is receiving medication and resting comfortably in his holding area while being closely monitored by the zoo’s veterinary team
At 19 years old, Kota is one of the oldest male lions at an Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo. The zoo said he has exceeded the median life expectancy for African lions, which is about 16.9 years
Visitors may occasionally see Kota in the former tiger habitat because it has fewer elevation changes, making it easier for him to navigate in his current condition
“His journey reflects the dedicated, lifelong care provided at AZA-accredited facilities, ensuring animals receive the support they need from youth through their senior years,” the zoo said in a social media post. “Every stage of an animal’s life brings unique needs, and our team is committed to providing Kota with the best possible care every step of the way.”
The zoo said it will continue to provide updates on Kota’s condition
