Okla. (KSWO) – The 97th Air Mobility Wing will conduct an active shooter exercise at L. Mendel Rivers Elementary School on Altus Air Force Base on Monday, Aug. 10
The main gate will close for approximately 10 minutes between 10 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. Base personnel and anyone with business on the installation are encouraged to avoid entering or exiting during that window
Base personnel, residents and visitors may hear simulated gunfire and exercise alerts over the giant voice system between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m
Base services will be limited during those hours due to the nature of the exercise. Emergency response vehicles and first responders will be responding accordingly during the event
According to a news release from the 97th AMW Public Affairs Office, “Exercises of this nature are critical for evaluating Department of War response actions to a lockdown incident and preparing for such events as realistically as possible. Base and community personnel have been and will continue to be focused on improving response plans for the safety of everyone on the installation.”
