ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bob Waller, who has been with New Mexico since 2013, has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Health and Performance. In this role, along with overseeing the entire athletic training and athletic performance staff, Waller will serve on the Vice President for Athletics’ Executive Leadership Team. He will also serve as the athletic department’s liaison to UNM Health and UNM Medical Group for health and wellness initiatives and partnerships

He will also assume sport administrator duties, serving initially as the sport supervisor for the Lobos’ nationally prominent men’s golf program

“The legacy for athletic training and sports medicine at UNM is a strong one, with the name of Tow Diehm, UNM’s former Head Athletic Trainer, gracing the Football complex. While there are big shoes to fill, there is no doubt in my mind that this marks the next chapter of Bob Waller’s lasting legacy on the University of New Mexico. Bob is an industry leader in the sports health and wellness space, and I am grateful to have his experience, expertise, and wisdom on my leadership team,” said Ryan Berryman, Vice President and Director of Athletics.

Most recently, Waller was serving as Associate Athletic Director for Health and Performance. He has been the head athletic trainer since 2013, working with the football program on day-to-day operations until 2022, when he moved into the Associate A.D. role and added oversight responsibilities

Waller came to UNM from fellow Mountain West rival Wyoming, where he served as the athletic trainer for the Cowboy Football team and oversaw the athletic training unit. Waller served in that capacity from 2009 to 13

In addition to serving as the associate athletic trainer at New Mexico from 2003 to 2009, Waller spent four summers, from 2002 to 2005, working in NFL Europe. He was an assistant athletic trainer for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in 2002

The Barcelona Dragons hired Waller as head trainer during the summer of 2003. In the summer of 2004, Waller served as the head athletic trainer for the Scottish Claymores, and in his final year in NFL Europe, he was the head trainer for the Hamburg Sea Devils

He has served internships with ESPN’s X Games and the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL. Waller has also worked with the Justin Sports Medicine Team at rodeo events since 1999

Waller holds a certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a corrective exercise specialist. He has been certified by the National Athletic Trainers Board of Certification and has completed his American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification

Waller was an accredited clinical instructor at The University of New Mexico, teaching, among other things, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic rehabilitation exercises, and athletic training, including testing and K/muscle testing
