    Wayne State University celebrates major construction milestone with Health Sciences Research Building steel topping-out ceremony

    Wayne State University celebrated a major milestone in the construction of its new Health Sciences Research Building with a steel topping-out ceremony Aug. 4. The event marked the completion of the building’s structural steel framework as the project’s final beam was raised into place

    University leaders, government officials, project partners and iron workers participated in the ceremony. Before the official program, guests had the opportunity to sign the final beam before it was hoisted atop the building

    Ezemenari Obasi, Ph.D., vice president for Research & Innovation, addresses those assembled for the topping off ceremony.

    “This building is much more than steel and concrete. It is an investment in the future of research, innovation and economic growth for Detroit, our state and beyond,” said Ezemenari Obasi, Ph.D., vice president for Research & Innovation at Wayne State University. “It represents an investment in the future of discovery. Within these walls, researchers from across disciplines will come together to tackle some of society’s greatest health challenges. We will bring together experts in a modern, collaborative environment that will focus on cancer, neurosciences, systems biology and immunology, and metabolism and infectious diseases.”

    The $200 million, five-story, 160,000-square-foot Health Sciences Research Building will serve as a hub for collaborative, interdisciplinary biomedical and health sciences research, helping accelerate discoveries that improve health outcomes while strengthening Detroit’s innovation ecosystem

    “The research that will take place in the Health Sciences Research Building will be a major part of Wayne State’s Grand Challenges initiative – uniting researchers, students and partners to confront the most pressing issues facing society today,” Dr. Obasi said. “These teams will turn their bold ideas into real-world solutions that will improve lives in Detroit, our local communities and beyond. Community-engaged research will be an important part of the Health Sciences Research Building. Through dedicated areas and intentional outreach, the community will play a part in shaping research initiatives and co-creating solutions to Detroit’s most pressing health challenges.”
