Ala. (WSFA) – Public health officials in Alabama are urging swimmers to exercise extreme caution as cases of a potentially life-threatening, flesh-eating bacteria are seen along the Gulf Coast

The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) has confirmed 16 cases of vibriosis in the state, including one that has resulted in death

Vibriosis is caused by Vibrio bacteria, which thrive in warm coastal waters. Officials warn that the timing and location of swimming are critical factors in exposure

“Vibrio is found in higher numbers in May through October when the water temperature is warmer,” said DeJuana Grant, an epidemiologist with the Alabama Department of Public Health

According to health officials, Vibrio is not a newly imported threat but a naturally occurring pathogen in marine environments

“Vibrio are bacteria that naturally live in coastal water, and the bacteria can cause an illness called vibriosis,” Grant explained

“Coastal water includes salt water and brackish water. Vibrio can get inside an open wound and cause an infection.”

Public health officials stress that the primary entry point for the bacteria is through breaks in the skin. This includes:

    • Open wounds
    • Minor cuts and scrapes
    • Recent body piercings
    • New tattoos

The ADPH strongly advises staying out of Gulf waters if you have any skin openings

“Cover your wound with a waterproof bandage if it can come in contact with coastal waters,” Grant advised. “If you have an open wound, the best preventative measure is to stay out of salt and brackish water.”

While Vibrio is a marine bacterium, health experts warn that freshwater swimming spots carry their own risks. Other dangerous pathogens can live in local lakes, rivers, and ponds

Alabama is not alone in facing this seasonal threat. Vibrio cases and associated fatalities have been reported across other Gulf Coast states
