14 rare diseases added to Social Security disability fast-track list

    Maria FrancisUSA TODAY NETWORK
    Aug. 13, 2026, 11:54 a.m. ET

For families facing devastating diagnoses, months of waiting for disability benefits can add financial strain to an already overwhelming situation

The Social Security Administration has added 14 rare and severe medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances program, a fast-track process designed to speed disability claims for people whose conditions clearly meet the agency’s standards for benefits

The announcement, made Aug. 11, expands the list to 314 qualifying conditions. Since the program launched, more than 1.2 million people with severe disabilities have been approved for benefits through the accelerated process, according to the SSA

“Social Security is strengthening our disability programs and making the disability determination process better, faster, and higher-quality to serve the American public,” Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in a statement. “The Compassionate Allowances initiative cuts through red tape and allows us to deliver support to individuals who experience life-changing diagnoses and need help fast.”

The newly added conditions include rare genetic disorders, neurological diseases, severe childhood illnesses and several aggressive forms of cancer

What is Social Security’s Compassionate Allowances list?

The Compassionate Allowances, or CAL, list is Social Security’s way of identifying disability claims that should move faster because the applicant has a very serious medical condition that typically meets the agency’s disability rules

When someone applies for disability benefits, SSA reviews medical records to decide whether the person qualifies. For conditions on the Compassionate Allowances list, the agency uses technology to identify potential qualifying claims and expedite the review process

What are the 14 new conditions Social Security added?

Here are the 14 conditions newly added to Social Security’s Compassionate Allowances list, along with simple explanations of what they generally are

Adenylosuccinate Lyase Deficiency, Neonatal Form and Type 1

This is a rare inherited disorder that affects how the body processes certain building blocks needed for normal brain and body function. In its most severe forms, it can appear in newborns or young children and may involve seizures, developmental problems and serious neurological issues

    Aicardi Syndrome

Aicardi syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that mostly affects girls. It can involve brain abnormalities, seizures and eye problems, and children with the condition often have developmental delays. CBS News noted Aicardi syndrome as one of the rare pediatric and neurological disorders included in the new additions

    Baraitser-Winter Syndrome

This is a rare genetic condition that can affect the brain, face, eyes and development. In simple terms, it is a disorder that can change how a child’s body and brain develop

    Beare-Stevenson Cutis Gyrata Syndrome

This is a rare genetic disorder that can affect the skull, skin and facial features. The name “cutis gyrata” refers to thick, folded skin, often on the scalp

    Bohring-Opitz Syndrome

Bohring-Opitz syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that can cause severe developmental delays, feeding problems, growth issues and distinctive physical features. NewsNation/Yahoo listed it among the rare genetic disorders included in the new SSA additions

    CASK-Related Gene Disorders

These are rare disorders caused by changes in the CASK gene, which plays an important role in brain development. People with CASK-related disorders may have developmental delays, intellectual disability, seizures or problems with movement

    Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma

This is a rare and aggressive cancer of the immune system. It usually affects the liver, spleen and bone marrow. It was one of the cancers newly added to the Compassionate Allowances list

    Lafora Disease

Lafora disease is a rare, inherited neurological disorder that usually causes worsening seizures and progressive brain function decline. In plain terms, it is a severe epilepsy-related disease that gets worse over time

Malignant Migrating Partial Seizures of Infancy

This is a rare and severe seizure disorder that begins in infancy. Babies with the condition can have frequent seizures that move from one part of the brain to another

    OPHN1 Syndrome

OPHN1 syndrome is a rare genetic condition linked to intellectual disability and brain development problems. It can also involve seizures, movement issues or delays in speech and motor skills

    Primary Cardiac Sarcoma

This is a rare cancer that starts in the heart. It is one of the rare cancers newly added to the fast-track disability list

    Primary Intracranial Malignant Melanoma

This is a rare and serious form of melanoma that starts inside the brain or central nervous system. It is different from melanoma that begins on the skin and later spreads

    Uveal Melanoma with Metastases

Uveal melanoma is a cancer that starts in the eye. “With metastases” means the cancer has spread to another part of the body, making it more advanced and serious. It was one of the newly added cancers listed by SSA

    Warburg Micro Syndrome

Warburg micro syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that can affect the eyes, brain, muscles and development. Children with the condition may have severe developmental delays and vision problems

Does being on the list mean automatic Social Security disability approval?

Not exactly. Being diagnosed with one of the conditions on the Compassionate Allowances list can speed up the disability review process, but applicants still need to apply and provide medical records so SSA can make a decision

SSA said it must obtain medical records when a person applies for disability benefits, and the agency uses technology to identify possible Compassionate Allowances conditions and expedite claims processing

How many conditions are now on the Compassionate Allowances list?

With the 14 new additions, Social Security’s Compassionate Allowances list now includes 314 conditions. Since the program began, more than 1.2 million people with severe disabilities have been approved through the accelerated process, SSA said

The conditions on the list generally include certain cancers, adult brain disorders and rare disorders that affect children

How do you apply for Social Security disability benefits?

People can apply for disability benefits online at SSA.gov. The agency said applicants are reviewed using medical records, and its Health IT program can securely receive electronic medical records in some cases to help adjudicators make faster and more accurate decisions

Families, patients and caregivers can also review the full Compassionate Allowances list on Social Security’s website to see whether a condition is included
