Marine Corps officials have identified Pvt. Aiden Gregory Craig, an 18-year-old Murphy resident and recent Wylie High School graduate, as the recruit who died four days after experiencing a medical emergency at Camp Pendleton
Craig experienced the emergency Aug. 1 during a routine physical fitness evaluation at the Californiamilitarybase. He died Aug. 5 at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside
Craig was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and was on his 47th day of recruit training when the emergency occurred

The circumstances remain under investigation, and officials have not disclosed Craig’s cause of death. The Marine Corps also is conducting a medical review in accordance with standard procedures
While Craig was hospitalized, he was presented with the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, according to an obituary published by Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home. The Marine Corps emblem is presented when a recruit earns the title of United States Marine
Craig’s father, Brent, placed the emblem in his son’s hand while 1st Sgt. Craig was born in Plano, spent his childhood in Murphy and graduated from Wylie High School on May 23. He left for Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego days later
A two-year varsity letterman in football and track, Craig played defensive end for the Wylie Pirates and earned second-team all-district honors as a senior

The toughness, loyalty and camaraderie Craig found through football helped draw him to the Marine Corps, according to his obituary. He hoped to serve in artillery alongside Marines in the field, the obituary says
In the obituary, his family remembered him as humble, funny and dependable. Whether someone needed a ride, help with a job or simply someone to show up, Craig’s response was often the same: “I gotchu.”
A public visitation is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen. A candlelight vigil will follow at 8:30 p.m. at Wylie ISD Stadium
Craig’s funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Aug. 22 at Cottonwood Creek Church in Allen. He will be buried with Marine Corps military honors at Ridgeview Memorial Park

His family is establishing an educational endowment in his memory through the Wylie ISD Education Foundation
