Survey Finds Health Tracking Can Fuel Anxiety and Wellness Burnout

Survey Finds Health Tracking Can Fuel Anxiety and Wellness Burnout

WASHINGTON — From counting steps to scoring your sleep, tracking health has become part of the daily routine for many Americans. The numbers can offer motivation and reveal useful patterns. They can also create another

A survey examined what Americans monitor, which health concerns weigh on them, and when self-tracking begins to affect their well-being.

Study Reveals How Health Tracking Affects Sleep and Mental Health

With apps and wearable devices providing a steady stream of health data, researchers explored how Americans respond to having so much information about their bodies

A study conducted by Naturepedic and North Star Inbound surveyed 2,009 U.S. adults, analyzing the health metrics they track, how often they check them, their biggest concerns and the pressure they feel to improve different areas of their health

The goal was to understand when health monitoring supports healthier habits and when it contributes to stress, self-doubt or burnout

    Here are their findings

    Key Findings

    • Sixty-four percent of Americans track at least one aspect of their health every day.
    • Fifty-eight percent feel overwhelmed by the amount of health and wellness advice online.
    • More than one-third have stopped tracking a metric because it made them feel worse mentally.
    • Weight is the most commonly tracked health metric, followed by steps or physical activity.
    • Weight and sleep are the top health concerns.
    • Fitness and diet are the areas people feel the greatest pressure to optimize.
    • More than half of U.S. adults track their sleep, with sleep duration and sleep quality both ranking in the top five most commonly monitored metrics.

    Key Terms

The researchers used three terms to describe different ways health monitoring can affect mental well-being and sleep

Optimization anxiety: The stress or self-doubt that develops when monitoring and improving health begins to feel like another standard a person must meet

Orthosomnia: A preoccupation with achieving ideal sleep data that creates anxiety and can interfere with falling or staying asleep

Wellness burnout: The exhaustion that can follow prolonged pressure to monitor, improve, and keep up with health advice, sometimes leading people to abandon tracking altogether

    Key Metrics and Factors

Americans monitor a broad mix of personal health measures and environmental exposures

The top health metrics tracked were weight at 81.5%, steps/physical activity at 71.9%, water intake at 63.8%, sleep duration at 60.3%, and sleep quality at 47.4%. Calories, protein, and heart rate followed closely behind

Environmental monitoring was also common. Sun exposure ranked first at 45.5%, followed by air quality at 42.8%, food additives at 40.2%, water quality at 39%, and mold at 34.2%. More than one-quarter monitored chemicals such as PFAS and pesticides, while 26.6% tracked microplastics

The Top 5 U.S. Cities With the Highest Health Optimization Anxiety

1.Dallas, Texas (Score: 99.74): Dallas ranked first, with 68% tracking their health daily. Residents also recorded the nation’s highest rates of protein, hormone, and mindfulness-minute tracking

    2. Austin, Texas (Score: 97.06): Three-quarters of Austin residents tracked at least one health measure daily. The city also ranked first for weight and alcohol tracking
