PORT ANGELES — Olympic Medical Center Foundation’s 13th annual Hog Wild celebration raised $88,000 while 310 people enjoyed music, dance and games

Proceeds from Hog Wild Goes to Carnival in Rio, which was presented by North Olympic Healthcare Network and Kitsap Bank on Friday, will go to the Olympic Medical Center’s Children’s Clinic and the OMC Foundation Scholarship fund, which provides funds for people who want to enter the healthcare profession, especially in Peninsula College’s medical-related programs

George Brown of Sequim, who provided the seed money for the scholarship fund, matched dollar for dollar Fund a Need donations up to $20,000

The unique fundraiser offered carnival games outside the tent at Civic Field as well as authentic Brazilian music and dance
    inside it

Members of the audience got up and danced to the music of seven-piece EntreMundos Big Band, led by singer and promoter Adriana Giordano

Several also were brought on stage to learn some samba steps and dance with Deise Costa and members of her company, Brazilian Swag

The Seattle-based entertainment provided the mood for the theme of Carnival in Rio. Another fundraiser is planned in February that will provide an elite tour of Rio de Janeiro and San Salvador during Carnival in Brazil, the biggest party in the world

Bruce Skinner, the executive director of the OMC Foundation, will lead the tour and Costa will be among the guides

“I thank you for the way you are supporting your local hospital,” Steve Oliver, the first president of the OMC Foundation, told the audience

Oliver served beginning in 1985 and presided over the board when it hired Skinner in 1990

“That was the smartest move the board ever made,” Oliver said

Skinner recognized all of the foundation’s past presidents as he noted the upcoming 75th anniversary of Olympic Medical Center. OMC opened on Nov. 1, 1951, as the Olympic Memorial Hospital

Kevin Joyce, auctioneer and cofounder of Enjoy Productions, which organized the program, thanked those who contributed to the hospital

“Rural hospitals are being decimated, and you are doing something about it,” he said

“The government is not fixing healthcare,” Joyce said later in the program. “Communities are.”
