Why FFPs matter
In poultry production, feed typically accounts for 70–80% of total costs, and feed- related emissions are responsible for a comparable proportion of the sector’s carbon footprint. In response, attention has turned towards alternative feed ingredients that do not compete directly with the human food supply but provide environmental and economic benefits
The EU Catalogue of ‘Feed Materials’ defines ‘former foods’ as foodstuffs which were manufactured for human consumption in full compliance with EU food law but are no longer intended for human consumption for practical or logistical reasons, or due to manufacturing or packaging defects or other issues, and which do not present any health risks when used as feed
