Florida is home to one of the nation’s largest Medicare populations. For thousands of our seniors, obesity is more than a number on a scale — it’s a chronic disease that increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and many other serious health conditions. Yet since the addition of Medicare Part D benefits in 2003, Medicare has had a statutory exclusion for the very medications that help patients treat obesity successfully

That is why the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program is such an important step forward

Beginning in July, eligible Medicare beneficiaries can access certain FDA-approved obesity medications for a predictable monthly cost through a temporary federal demonstration program. For many older adults who have been unable to afford these breakthrough therapies, the Bridge Program offers something they have not had before: an opportunity

For patients, this means a chance to improve their health, maintain their independence, and reduce the complications that often accompany untreated obesity later in life. For physicians, it means offering evidence-based treatment to more patients instead of telling them that an effective therapy exists but remains financially out of reach

Here in Florida, the potential impact is especially significant. More than one in five Floridians is over the age of 65, and obesity affects a substantial portion of our senior population. Many older adults struggle with mobility, chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes — conditions that are often made worse by untreated obesity. Effective treatment can help improve quality of life while potentially reducing costly hospitalizations and other medical complications

The Bridge Program also reflects an important shift in how policymakers view obesity. For too long, obesity has been treated as a lifestyle choice or personal failing rather than a complex chronic disease recognized by leading medical organizations. Scientific advances have transformed what is possible for patients affected by obesity, and public policy is beginning to catch up

Still, this program is only a bridge

As a demonstration program, it is temporary. The Bridge program is currently approved through Dec. 31, 2027. Patients should not have to wonder whether access to effective obesity treatment will disappear after this limited pilot ends. Physicians should not have to interrupt successful treatment because of arbitrary coverage gaps

Florida’s congressional delegation has long championed innovation in health care and improving seniors’ lives. Now they have an opportunity to build on this progress by supporting policies that provide sustainable Medicare coverage for clinically appropriate obesity treatments and ensuring these therapies remain financially accessible to the patients who need them most. By supporting the Balance Program, another initiative led by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, we can sustain these benefits long term and keep obesity treatment affordable for our seniors.

Obesity is a chronic disease. Like hypertension or diabetes, it deserves consistent, evidence-based treatment — not temporary solutions

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program is a meaningful milestone that acknowledges this reality. Now we should use it to show what physicians already know: when patients have access to the right treatment, they are healthier, more independent, and better able to enjoy the golden years they have worked so hard to earn

    Florida’s seniors deserve nothing less
