    • Redford Township home declared too dangerous for responders to enter due to deplorable living conditions and fumes, requiring specialized protective equipment.
    • Animal control officers found over 20 feral cats hiding in flooded basement and debris-filled home, with six rescued and taken for evaluation.
    • Property deemed unfit for occupancy, with homeowner cited for animal cruelty and exceeding allowable number of animals, neighbors urged to report early signs of animal hoarding.

A Michigan cat rescue became a public-health and property-safety case after authorities said conditions inside a Redford Township home were too dangerous for responders to enter without special precautions

Redford Township Animal Control responded to a home in the 20000 block of Gaylord Street on June 24 after receiving a welfare-check request

Officers found what officials described as deplorable living conditions, and the homeowner was taken to a Metro Detroit hospital for treatment

Animal-hoarding cases can move beyond an animal-control problem when waste, fumes, standing water, structural concerns, and possible disease exposure make the home unsafe for residents, neighbors, and first responders

Responders Had To Ventilate the House First

After obtaining a search warrant, animal control officers from Redford Township, Southfield, Dearborn Heights, and Wayne tried to enter the home but had to retreat because of suffocating fumes and gases inside

The Redford Township Fire Department broke out windows to ventilate the structure and installed screens to keep potentially diseased cats from escaping

The Wayne County Public Health Department determined that the home was too dangerous to enter without several days of ventilation, high-level respirators, and specialized protective equipment

Crews Found Flooding and Hiding Cats

Officials returned June 28 with a second search warrant after the building department determined the house was safe enough for limited entry

The conditions were still severe. Authorities found more than two feet of water in the basement, and animal control officers worked in 10-minute shifts

Officials saw more than 20 feral cats, but many scattered into the basement, rafters, tunnels, and piles of debris

    The Rescue Is Still Ongoing

As of June 30, six cats had been rescued and transported to Michigan Humane for evaluation and treatment. Live traps remain inside the home and are being checked daily

WXYZ reported that neighbors had complained about smell and flies, while officials said the slow response was about responder safety

Redford Township Supervisor Pat McCrae said his concern was that someone might enter the home and not come back out safely

The Home Has Been Declared Unfit for Occupancy

The Wayne County Health Officer declared the property an imminent danger to public health and prohibited anyone other than authorized personnel from entering. Officials warned that unauthorized entry could lead to criminal charges

The Redford Township Building Department also declared the home unfit for occupancy and is pursuing additional legal action

The homeowner has been cited for exceeding the allowable number of animals, and two animal cruelty charges tied to medical care and unsanitary conditions have been submitted to the prosecutor’s office for review

    Neighbors Should Report Conditions Early

Animal-hoarding cases may first show up as odor, flies, noise, visible animals, trash, or concern for someone living inside the home

Neighbors should document visible concerns from outside, contact animal control or code enforcement, and request a welfare check when a resident may be in danger

If public-health officials restrict access to a property, residents should stay out and let trained crews work with protective equipment. Well-meaning attempts to enter can expose neighbors to hazardous air, waste, damaged floors, standing water, animals in distress, and other unsafe conditions
