Thanks toits nuclear propulsion and the supply of food and other essentials from other vessels, one of the world’s most powerful aircraft carriers, theUSS Abraham Lincoln, can remain at sea indefinitely. However, for the crew, this could take a toll on their <a href="https://healthylife7.com/soar-study-to-host-two-community-conversations-on-mental-health-findings/" title="SOAR Study to host two Community Conversations on mental health findings”>mental health

In 2020, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower spent 206 consecutive days at sea, setting a record for endurance. That record was just broken by the Abraham Lincoln, which has been sailing for more than 266 consecutive days. The milestone is raising concerns about the mental health of its nearly 5,000 crew members

Since January, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier has been in the Arabian Sea to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and support U.S. military operationsagainst Iran

On November 21, 2025, it set sail from its base in San Diego, California, for a routine deployment. After staying at the base in Guam in the Pacific between December 10 and 12, it was dispatched to the Middle East. That technical layover in Guam was the last time the ship made landfall

    Anxiety, depression, and stress

The crews of this type of vessel are typically prepared to remain at sea for several months. However, according to reports published by the defense news site Stars and Stripes, some sailors expressed deep emotional exhaustion to their families after so many months of continuous operations

Such extended operations mean workdays stretch on for many hours, with scarce opportunities for rest and no chance to leave the ship to recover psychologically

The site Infodefensaadds that the U.S. armed forces have increased psychological support programs for their personnel, especially after detecting a rise in cases of anxiety, depression, and stress

However, situations like that of the Lincolnonce again highlight the difficulties of maintaining the emotional well-being of thousands of people confined for months in a high-demand environment

Military medicine specialists state that the combination of isolation, cumulative fatigue, constant pressure, and a lack of contact with daily life can impair operational performance and increase the risk of mental health issues arising

As by June 30, 2026, the United States had deployed near Iran—in addition to the Lincoln—the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush and the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group. In total, there are 19 warships and 28 aircraft, with around 50,000 personnel
