New Mexico health officials are warning residents that mosquitoes could remain active later into the year as warmer temperatures and increased rainfall create conditions that are favorable for the insects

The New Mexico Department of Health said West Nile virus, the state’s most common mosquito-borne disease, generally peaks in late summer

This year, however, weather patterns could stretch the period of increased risk into the fall, with transmission potentially continuing until the first hard freeze

The warning is especially important for people whose immune systems are weakened

Health officials said recent research indicates that individuals taking medications that reduce or modify B cells may face a greater risk of severe illness from viral infections, including West Nile virus

Residents should speak with their <a href="https://healthylife7.com/employer-healthcare-expenses-could-spike-9-5-in-2027-pressured-by-glp/” title=”Employer healthcare expenses could spike 9.5% in 2027, pressured by GLP”>healthcare providers about whether medications or medical conditions affect their vulnerability

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, weakness, loss of balance or confusion should contact a doctor

Health officials also recommend using Environmental Protection Agency-approved insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are most active, and eliminating standing water around homes
