DENVER — As Coloradans make the most of the final weeks of summer, Colorado Parks and Wildlife is reminding outdoor enthusiasts that preparation and small choices can help protect people, public lands and wildlife

    Community Message

The agency’s Aug. 20 guidance emphasizes checking conditions before leaving home, preventing wildfires, wearing life jackets and giving wildlife extra space as drought and ongoing fires create additional challenges across the state

    Know Before You Go

Conditions in Colorado’s parks and open spaces can change quickly. CPW recommends checking trail conditions, closures, weather forecasts and local regulations before heading outdoors

Visitors should also confirm camping reservations and water or boating restrictions before traveling. The agency’s State Park Finder and Colorado Trail Explorer tools can help recreationists research destinations and changing conditions

CPW also recommends carrying more water than expected, including enough for pets

    Prevent the Next Wildfire

With large wildfires already burning in Colorado, dry vegetation and gusty winds can allow a small ignition to grow rapidly

Outdoor recreationists should check current fire restrictions before traveling and use established metal fire rings where campfires are permitted. Fires should never be left unattended and must be thoroughly soaked until the ashes are cold

CPW also warns motorists against parking or driving over dry grass. Hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation, while dragging chains and exposed wheel rims can produce sparks

Wear a Life Jacket on Colorado Waters

CPW says life jackets remain one of the most important pieces of safety equipment for boaters, paddlers and others recreating on the water

“Lifeguards don’t monitor Colorado waters, so properly wearing a life jacket when enjoying water sports is a required piece of safety gear that can help save your life if you become stressed in water or if an emergency arises,” Boating Safety and Registrations Program Manager Grant Brown said

Life jacket requirements also apply to paddleboards and kayaks

Heavy rainfall can rapidly change river levels and conditions. CPW recommends checking flows before entering rivers and streams, traveling with a companion and staying within conditions that match a person’s experience and abilities

Boaters and paddlers should also clean, drain and dry watercraft and equipment to help prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species

    Bears Facing Difficult Summer Conditions

Drought and wildfires are also putting additional pressure on Colorado wildlife. CPW estimates the state is home to approximately 17,000 to 20,000 black bears and reports higher-than-usual bear activity this summer as drought reduces natural food supplies

When food becomes scarce, bears may travel farther and take greater risks, increasing the possibility of encounters along trails, in campgrounds and in neighborhoods

CPW urges people not to intentionally feed bears or leave food, garbage or other attractants accessible

Outdoor recreationists should keep dogs leashed, pack out food and trash, properly store food while camping and remain alert in bear country. If a black bear approaches, people should not run. CPW recommends backing away slowly, making yourself appear larger and using a firm voice. Bear spray should be carried where it is quickly accessible and users should know how to deploy it

If a black bear makes physical contact, CPW advises fighting back rather than playing dead

Small actions — from extinguishing a campfire and wearing a life jacket to securing trash and giving wildlife room — can have a significant impact as Colorado heads toward the end of summer
