Beyonce has always been a trendsetter and an icon. The 35 Grammy Award winner shocked fans when she delivered an impeccable, action-packed performance. Without losing a single breath, at 2018 Coachella, displaying complicated choreography without compromising her pitch-perfect vocals, despite giving birth to twins merely months ago.Weeks before, she revealed the secret to her new sculpted physique and unparalleled energy to a 22-day vegan diet she followed for 44 days. The diet, which was created by her personal trainer Marco Borges, focused on a clean, plant-based diet, free from sugar, gluten and processed foods.
So What’s The 22-Day Vegan Diet?
In a chat with Essence, Borges admitted that as a Cuban, he grew up on a diet that was rich in non-vegetarian food – chicken, pork and steak. All members of his family suffered from chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases. He gradually realised how fewer people address the underlying causes of their diseases – poor diet.He said that switching to a plant-based diet can help lower the risk of premature heart attacks and also assist in long-term health and fitness. He also assured that people do not have to worry about being deprived of protein from this diet, which consists of legumes, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts: “All plant-based foods contain at least 14 percent of protein. We don’t have a protein deficiency. We have a fiber deficiency, and you can only find fiber in plant sources, not meat,” he said.
Vegan Doesn’t Mean Deprivation
In several interviews, Borges proved how going vegan need not be bland or monotonous or deprivation. In an interview with People, Borges revealed that Beyoncé and her hubby and fellow musician Jay-Z loved pizza, and he often made pizza made from cashew cheese, brown rice flour, tapioca flour, tomatoes, avocados, basil and olive oil for them.In another interview with Billboard, Borges shared some dishes from the diet, which included delicious stuff like chia pudding with berries, quinoa stuffed peppers, etc.
Does The Diet Work?
While the diva did not publicly share how much weight she lost through the diet, some people who followed her example revealed how much weight they lost within weeks. In a YouTube video, Kevin Reilly, a video producer from Business Insider, revealed he lost 15 pounds in just three weeks by following the diet. He admitted that in the first week, he felt frustrated and cranky, giving up on meat and eating cucumber, zucchini and carrots dipped in some tahini, but in the second week, he started feeling much better. Some of the dishes – a yummy broccoli in gravy and baked eggplant in pico de gallo – he found “damn good”. Some healthier alternatives to dairy products in the diet were cheeses made out of cashew paste. However, steering clear of non-veg dishes made him feel so better that he refused to touch a dish of bacon and started digging for vegetarian food even when he went off the diet.Another individual, a journalist from ABC News, reported that the diet helped her shed 8 pounds, and she spent weeks eating food recommended by Borges, such as almond butter, apples, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, grapes, kidney beans, etc. Her meals consisted of drinks such as kale, spinach, apple and pineapple juice, avocado on toast, quinoa salads, etc. Aside from losing weight, her digestion also improved, and she said her skin also appeared more radiant.Add ![]()
