A new daily weight loss and type 2 diabetes pill called Foundayo will be available in UK pharmacies from Monday.
Manufactured by Eli Lilly, Foundayo was authorised by the MHRA, making the UK the first country in Europe to approve the treatment.
The daily GLP-1 medication is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 alongside a weight-related condition.
Pharmacy leaders highlighted its importance for patients unable or unwilling to take injectable weight loss treatments, while warning against counterfeit pills.
Eli Lilly is working with NHS spending watchdog NICE regarding a potential rollout on the health service in England.
