Shares of Lexicon Pharmaceuticals (LXRX) edged 1% higher on Monday after the biotech firm announced it earned a third $10 million milestone payment from Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk (NVO) tied to progress on an experimental oral obesity drug
Lexicon announced the payment after Novo Nordisk hit a key patient-dosing target in the early-stage trial of LX9851. This marks the third $10 million development milestone Lexicon has received from Novo in 2026
LX9851 is an oral pill that blocks a protein involved in how the body stores fat and manages energy. It differs from injectable weight-loss drugs like Novo’s Wegovy. Early animal studies suggested it could enhance weight loss when combined with those injectables and help limit rebound gain after stopping them
Novo began the early-stage study in March 2026. It is checking safety, how the drug moves through the body, and early effects in overweight or obese adults. Results are due in the first quarter of 2027
“This milestone represents another important step forward in the development of LX9851 and further demonstrates the strong execution of our collaboration with Novo Nordisk,” CEO Mike Exton said. “In just over a year, the program has progressed from a licensing agreement to the successful achievement of multiple clinical development milestones.”
Deal Background And Remaining Potential
Novo Nordisk, best known for its weight-loss drug Wegovy, licensed LX9851 from Lexicon in March 2025, primarily to expand its obesity and metabolic disease pipeline. Novo gained full rights to develop, make, and sell LX9851 for any use while Lexicon received $45 million upfront
The total package can reach up to $1 billion in upfront and milestone payments, plus tiered royalties on future sales. With the latest payment, Lexicon has collected $75 million so far—leaving it eligible for roughly $925 million more if the program hits later development, approval, launch, and sales targets
The further payments are not guaranteed and hinge on Novo’s continued success. Royalties would range from the single digits to low double digits of net sales if the drug reaches patients
In June, at a conference, Exton said, “We expect another $10 million from the commencement of the multiple-ascending dose later this year.” Novo has indicated that they will move directly into phase II, when satisfaction from both of those studies is achieved, and that would mean another $60 million in the first part of 2027.”
As of June 30, Lexicon Pharmaceuticals held $190.6 million in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments
