A federal court hearing in Miami on Thursday revealed that Andrew and Tristan Tate’s long‑running display of hyper‑wealth was largely fabricated, according to new filings from their legal team

The disclosure matters now because prosecutors have cited the brothers’ supposed fortune as evidence they pose a serious flight risk while fighting extradition to the United Kingdom

The revelation could shape the judge’s decision on whether the brothers remain jailed, and it may influence future proceedings in the U.K. and Romania, where they face dozens of charges

Defense filings say the brothers’ online personas—complete with Bugattis, superyachts and claims of “uberwealth”—were exaggerated, rented or staged, and modeled after the absurd bravado of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G character

Their lawyers argue the posts were never meant to be taken literally, describing them as “obvious satire, hyperbole and promotion” designed to generate clicks and income

Andrew Tate’s Lawyer Says Online Persona Built on Satire and Exaggeration

Defense attorney Howard Srebnick told the court that Andrew Tate’s online swagger was a deliberate performance, comparing it directly to Cohen’s confrontational Ali G persona

The filings argue that Tate’s most notorious catchphrases and boasts—such as taunting critics with “What color is your Bugatti?”—were crafted to cultivate a cartoonish image of dominance rather than reflect real assets

The lawyers said the brothers routinely exaggerated their influence and wealth to millions of followers, portraying rented supercars and staged luxury as personal property

According to the filings, the more “hyperbolic and outlandish” the content, the more engagement it generated, which in turn boosted revenue from their online businesses

“In short, they are playing a role,” the attorneys wrote, arguing that prosecutors should not treat social‑media theatrics as evidence of actual financial capacity

    …

The filings directly addressed several high‑profile symbols of Tate wealth. Three hypercars featured prominently in their videos—a $2.1 million Aston Martin and two Bugattis valued at $5 million and $7 million—were rented, not owned. The defense said these vehicles were props used to reinforce the brothers’ online personas and should not be considered proof of substantial assets

Prosecutors also pointed to Andrew Tate’s tour of the 41‑meter Obsidian Blade superyacht as evidence of access to major financial ree brothers and that they were paid to promote it on social media

Even their watch collection—long touted as worth millions—was disputed; lawyers said online estimates were based on third‑party publications, not proof of ownership of the Jacob & Co., Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe pieces they were seen wearing

Why Prosecutors Say the Wealth Claims Still Matter

Federal prosecutors have argued that the brothers’ self‑portrayal as globe‑trotting multimillionaires supports the case that they could flee if released. They cited Andrew Tate’s past claims that he held multiple passports and could travel widely, as well as the brothers’ history of living abroad while under investigation

Independent legal experts say that question—whether the brothers present a credible flight risk—is likely to dominate the judge’s decision

“One of the primary issues that the court is going to consider, when deciding if Andrew and Tristan Tate should be released from custody pending an extradition hearing, is whether they are a legitimate ‘flight risk,’” attorney Jordan Matthews of Holtz Matthews LLP, who is not related to the case, told Newsweek

“The charges against them are serious, and the fact that they have apparently bragged about having numerous passports is problematic,” Matthews added. “However, they’ve offered to surrender their passports and have agreed to strict monitoring, which the court should strongly consider. Nevertheless, bail is often denied in international extradition cases, and I won’t be surprised if their request is denied.”

Prosecutors also highlighted their online businesses—such as Hustlers University, which charged $49.99 per month, and a $5,000 offshore‑finance course—as ventures built on projecting enormous wealth

The government has also pushed back on the brothers’ complaints about jail conditions, producing commissary receipts showing purchases of ramen, coffee, candy, Doritos and deodorant

Prosecutors say the brothers have access to recreation, visitors and phone calls, contradicting Tristan Tate’s testimony that he has lost weight and cannot properly defend himself from the secure housing unit

Extradition Fight Intensifies as UK Charges Mount

Andrew and Tristan Tate have been held in federal custody since July 18 and are fighting extradition to the U.K., where they face 59 charges, including rape, assault, trafficking and offenses involving indecent images. The Crown Prosecution Service has until mid‑September to provide evidence to the State Department, and no extradition hearing date has been set

Their lawyers argue the U.K.’s request is improper because the brothers’ separate criminal case in Romania is supposed to proceed first. Romanian authorities have allowed them to remain free under court restrictions, and the defense says the brothers have complied fully and never attempted to flee

The Miami judge reminded attorneys that she must follow U.S. law, not Romanian procedure, leaving the brothers’ fate in federal hands as the extradition clock continues to run
