A mental health worker lost 5 stone in just 12 weeks on an intensive diet course
Ross James McGarrigle, 49, from Ocean Village, said his friends, family and colleagues barely recognised him after he dropped from 19 to 14 stone in just 12 weeks
He said: “One of the psychologists at work didn’t even recognise me. She said I’d completely changed and looked noticeably younger.”
“It felt absolutely great to get that validation after all my hard work.”

His training group gave weekly awards for the biggest improvements, and Ross won almost every week
He said: “By the end, my achievement book was covered in stickers.”
“I’m not a social butterfly so it got a bit embarrassing how often I won!”
Ross followed what he called an SP diet, standing for “speed” and “protein”
“Speed” foods contain natural sugars and include fruit, while “protein” foods include meat and fish

Ross followed the diet two or three times a week and allowed himself the occasional treat to keep his morale up
He said: “I’ve learned a lot about healthy eating. It’s not about starving yourself or only eating salad. It’s also about having the things you like in a managed way.”
“I’ve learned how much younger you can look with changes to your diet.”

“He was sceptical at first, but he gave it his all
“He is a valued member of the group like everyone else, and an inspiration to other members in the group session
“He’s still sharing ideas and tips every week about how he managed his plan and his journey
“Nearly a year on, he’s still at target, which is fantastic.”
