Drinking a daily glass of 100 per cent fruit juice or a smoothie may help support mental well-being, with a small four-week trial finding lower depression scores among participants who included either in their diet, according to multiple media reports
The randomised controlled trial, conducted by researchers at Newcastle University in the UK, involved adults who typically consumed relatively little fruit and vegetables. Participants received support to increase their intake as part of efforts to meet the UK’s five-a-day recommendation
While both groups increased their fruit and vegetable consumption after four weeks, those who included a daily glass of fruit juice or a smoothie reported significantly lower depression scores, the reports said
The peer-reviewed findings were published in the British Journal of Nutrition and funded by the Fruit Juice Science Centre
Researchers said the findings add to evidence that simple and practical dietary changes could potentially benefit mental health
Dr Courtney Neal, who completed the study at Newcastle University and is now at the University of Liverpool, said targeted financial and educational support helped participants overcome barriers to eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day
“While most people know eating 5-a-day can be good for your health, many people struggle to,” Neal said
“Our trial showed that when people with low fruit and vegetable intake were provided with targeted financial and educational support to address common barriers to eating 5-a-day, they were able to make meaningful changes to their diet. We found that simple, cost-effective solutions, like drinking a small glass of 100% fruit juice or a smoothie daily, could help people reach their 5-a-day, with potential benefits for mental well-being,” she said
