Chronic Illness Raises Infection Risk: Why Adult Vaccines Matter

Observing National Immunization Awareness Month, Dr. Saurabh Arora, Consultant Endocrinology, Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, said, Patients with diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disorders often tell me they have never needed adult vaccines and see no reason to start

    New Update

Managing sugar levels, taking heart medications on schedule, or keeping up with routine kidney check-ups, many patients with chronic conditions believe they are doing everything right. Yet a simple bout of flu or pneumonia can undo months of careful management in just days. What many patients overlook is that chronic illness subtly alters the immune system, making it far harder for the body to fight off layered infections

Observing National Immunization Awareness Month, Dr. Saurabh Arora, Consultant Endocrinology, Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, said, “Patients with diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disorders often tell me they have never needed adult vaccines and see no reason to start. What they don’t realise is that their condition has quietly altered their immune response. An infection, a healthy adult shrugs off in a few days can hospitalise a person with diabetes, trigger heart failure, or overwhelm already strained kidneys. Vaccination isn’t an extra precaution, it is an essential part of managing the primary illness itself.”

    Why Chronic Illness Weakens Defense

    • Diabetes: Impairs immune function, making viral and bacterial infections harder to fight and slower to resolve.
    • Heart Disease: Flu and respiratory infections spark systemic inflammation, significantly increasing the risk of heart attacks or heart failure flares.
    • Kidney Disease: Advanced-stage illness and dialysis weaken immunity while increasing infection exposure through frequent medical visits.

None of these vulnerabilities show up on routine blood pressure or glucose monitors; they only manifest once an infection takes hold

Key Vaccines to Discuss with Your Doctor

    • Influenza (Flu): Annual vaccination is necessary as immunity wanes and flu strains evolve.
    • Pneumococcal: Protects against severe pneumonia and dangerous bloodstream infections.
    • Hepatitis B: Crucial for diabetics who undergo regular blood glucose testing.
    • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Recommended for older adults and those with underlying heart, lung, or kidney conditions.

    Who is Most at Risk?

    • Adults with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes
    • Heart patients (including those with past bypass surgery, stents, or heart failure)
    • Individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), particularly those on dialysis or awaiting transplants
    • Adults aged 50 and older
    • Patients on immunosuppressive therapies

What Skipping Vaccination Can Lead To

In a person with chronic illness, an infection rarely stays isolated. Blood sugar spikes triggered by systemic stress can turn a mild flu into severe pneumonia. A respiratory infection can destabilise a heart patient into ICU admission, and even routine infections can accelerate kidney function decline.

    The Bottom Line

Managing a chronic condition requires continuous daily vigilance with the help of medications, dietary changes, and regular tracking. Vaccination is one of the simplest, most effective measures available, requiring action only once or twice a year to protect months of hard work
