For years, fleet safety strategies have focused on the fundamentals: vehicle maintenance, licence verification, compliance checks and driver training. These remain vital components of any fleet operation but as duty of care expectations increase and fleet managers face greater scrutiny over road risk, there is growing recognition that one critical factor continues to be overlooked: driver wellbeing

A driver may be fully compliant on paper, with all mandatory checks completed and a clean driving record, yet still be at heightened risk behind the wheel. Fatigue, stress, anxiety and poor mental health can all impair concentration, decision-making and reaction times, potentially increasing the likelihood of incidents on the road. These factors are often less visible than vehicle defects or expired licences, making them harder to identify through traditional compliance processes

The issue has become increasingly relevant following the introduction of the Government’s National Work-Related Road Safety Charter, which places renewed emphasis on organisational responsibility and accountability for employees who drive as part of their role. While compliance remains the foundation of effective fleet management, there is a clear shift towards demonstrating proactive risk management rather than simply proving that checks have been completed

The challenge for fleet operators is that wellbeing-related risks rarely appear in isolation. A driver experiencing fatigue may not disclose it. Stress caused by workload pressures or personal circumstances may not be apparent to managers. Yet both can manifest through changes in driving behaviour long before an incident occurs

Data can play a transformative role

Modern fleets generate vast quantities of operational information through telematics, vehicle records, maintenance systems, incident reporting and journey management tools. When viewed independently, these data points provide useful insights. When connected, they can reveal patterns that help identify potential risks before they escalate

Repeated harsh braking events, speeding alerts or erratic driving patterns may initially appear insignificant but if those events occur more frequently during certain periods, coincide with extended driving hours or follow changes in vehicle usage, they may indicate a need for further investigation and support. Rather than waiting for an accident to happen, fleet managers can use these insights to intervene earlier and take preventative action

This proactive approach represents a significant evolution in fleet management. Instead of relying solely on periodic compliance checks and post-incident reviews, organisations can use connected data to build a more complete picture of driver risk. The result is not only improved safety outcomes but also stronger duty of care, reduced operational disruption and a healthier, more engaged workforce

As fleet operations become increasingly data-driven, the most successful organisations will be those that recognise driver wellbeing as an integral part of risk management rather than a separate health and safety initiative. Compliance alone is no longer enough. Understanding the factors that influence driver performance every day is becoming essential to creating safer, more resilient fleets

    How Jaama Can Help

Jaama’s fleet management software helps organisations move beyond traditional compliance by bringing together driver, vehicle and operational data into a single, connected view. By identifying trends, highlighting emerging risks and providing actionable insights, fleet operators can take a more proactive approach to protecting their drivers and managing duty of care responsibilities
