INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command completed a field training exercise (FTX) on Camp Atterbury, Indiana (CAIN), August 7-9, 2026.
The exercise, in preparation for the 310th ESC’s 2027 and 2028 Annual Training requirements, gave unit sections the opportunity to set up their workstations and train in an austere environment.
(The FTX) “is a combat multiplier,” said Brig. Gen. Stephen Pazak, Commanding General, 310th ESC. “We’re getting stick time for our drivers, field time for our troopers, and we’re getting the ability to work together as a team and enhance the collaboration that Brickyard Nation is known for.”
The FTX gave the G1 Personnel section an opportunity to participate in critical field training outside the garrison environment.
“It helped us identify our training needs related to battle drills and human resource functions that are not part of our garrison battle rhythms,” said Lt. Col. Andrew Lawrence, Army Chief of Staff, G1, 310th ESC. “In the field we’re focused on manning the force and having unit strength to support and sustain the fight as it moves forward.”
The G6 Signal/Networks section also helped sustain the fight through its communication capabilities.
“The G6’s mission for the FTX is to provide unclassified network connectivity and to enable secure radio communication,” said Maj. Tae Paschal, Army Chief of Staff, G6, 310th ESC.
“Communication is a big portion of unit readiness. We have to communicate with each other or nothing works,” added Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jacqlyn White, Network Operations Warrant Officer, 310th ESC.
The G3 Operations section created and communicated a great plan that helped make this year’s exercise a success.
“Coming into the event, our primary function was to plan, coordinate, and assist the Headquarters and Headquarters Company in the deployment, operations, and re-deployment of the 310th headquarters to CAIN,” said Lt. Col. Stephen Punch, Future Operations Readiness Branch Chief, G3, 310th ESC.
Combined Training Events (CTE) shape readiness in a multitude of ways. This FTX was no exception being that it “helped us learn how to operate our equipment, how to pack, how to dispatch, how to troubleshoot, how to organize for movement to the field, how to train during BA, and how to prepare to operate in an austere environment,” said Paschal.
The field gives Soldiers a unique opportunity to practice and hone their craft. Spc. Dymond Foster, Tactical Power Generation Specialist, HHC, 310th ESC, understands the importance of field craft in her emphasis on keeping the operation supplied with power.
“Each section gives me a breakdown of what equipment they’re planning on running,” said Foster.” “Then as far as the HHC motor pool side, I create and develop a plan. This gives my section an idea of which generators we’ll need. We also have to provide movement for the generators. So, we’ll have to get access to a forklift and make sure we have drivers.”
Soldiers used this field time to increase their knowledge and strengthen their skills.
“Tearing down the tents was kind of fun,” said Pfc. Wyatt Strawmyer, Intelligence Analyst, G2 Intelligence, 310th ESC. “I also really liked the planning aspect with Force Protection where they had the map up and plotted where the tents and machine gun nests would go.”
“This exercise brought back my love for mechanics,” said Foster. “Getting to work hands-on again with the generators is amazing. I get to do something that I love again, and I get to help people.”
Chief Warrant Officer 2 White and G6 leaders also noted the exercise’s positive impact on her section.
“As a critical validation event, the FTX enhanced the G6’s cohesion, identified training gaps, and assessed overall operational readiness,” said White.
Finally, the exercise was praised for improving the 310th ESC’s combat effectiveness.
“As a Headquarters and Headquarters Company, our capacity to assembly at the HQ, ground assault more than 50 miles to CAIN, then operate in a tactical environment as a team, builds camaraderie and proficiency for whenthe nation calls us, we’re ready, and we can do our job,” said Pazak.
