New Balance’s archival sneakers make up a chunk of the Boston-based footwear company’s business but also continue to inform new lifestyle output. Popular shoes such as the Abzorb 2000, Abzorb 2010 and 9060 borrow cues from heritage designs while updating them with futuristic elements. Soon, the brand will grow this category with the all-new 983 model, which was revealed Tuesday with an assist from Coco Gauff ahead of her U.S. Open first-round match
The New Balance 983, according to the brand, takes inspiration from its 2000s-era running shoes while affirming its own bold identity and is “designed for those who embrace every facet of their personal style.”

Somewhat reminiscent of the aforementioned 9060, the new 983 features elliptic Abzorb SBS pods which are paired with wave moldings for an extraterrestrial-looking dual-density midsole. Up top, the 983’s mesh-based upper is supported by rounded synthetic overlays, which materialize with a glossy patent leather-like finish in a Shadow Blue/Zinc Blue color combination
Previewed ahead of launch by New Balance designer Yue Wu, the 983 was formally unveiled Tuesday with a campaign starring Gauff that’s also set to include fellow brand partner Aminé. New Balance says the campaign is intended to celebrate self-expression and individuality while highlighting the 983’s versatility across a variety of looks.
“The idea for the campaign actually came from a vision meeting I had with the New Balance team,” Gauff said in a press release. “I thought it would be cool to showcase the different sides of my personality through style. It was fun bringing the vision to life with Aminé and getting creative with styling the shoe in different ways. I love pieces that are fashion-forward but still easy to wear, and the 983 goes with any outfit.”
The New Balance 983 will be released Oct. 1 on newbalance.com and select retailers for $160. The style code for the debut Shadow Blue/Zinc Blue colorway is U9835DU
