The Arc of Chester Countyis empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to find their voice, advocate for their rights, and create meaningful change through its Self-Determination Subcommittee
Operating in partnership with the Chester County MH/IDD Self-Determination Committee, the Self-Determination Subcommittee focuses on education, advocacy, and action related to issues impacting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including Autism
The committee serves as a platform for self-advocates to learn, connect, and engage in efforts that promote equality, inclusion, and greater independence
Committee Participation
“Self-determination is about having the knowledge, confidence, and opportunity to make decisions about your own life,” said Tanja van den Tol, Director of Advocacy, The Arc of Chester County. “By helping individuals understand their rights, speak up about the issues that matter most to them, and engage with community leaders, we are building stronger advocates and stronger communities.”
Through participation in the committee, individuals have opportunities to:
- Advocate for policies that promote self-determination and independence.
- Learn about disability rights and available services.
- Share resources, tools, and best practices.
- Build connections with peers, professionals, and community leaders.
- Address barriers to inclusion and community participation.
- Collaborate with local, state, and federal partners.
- Help identify legislative priorities and implementation strategies.
Meeting topics include individual rights, self-advocacy, provider roles, disability services, funding systems, the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA), voting rights, self-care, and other issues affecting people with disabilities and their families
Members Welcome
The Self-Determination Subcommittee welcomes adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are interested in learning, leading, and making a difference in their communities
Participants gain valuable skills, develop leadership abilities, and become part of a growing movement dedicated to ensuring that every individual has a voice in the decisions that affect their lives
The committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at The Arc of Chester County, 900 Lawrence Drive, West Chester, PA 19380. Virtual participation is also available through Zoom
