Ga. (WTOC) – GLP-1 medications became available to some Medicare Part D patients on July 1, expanding access to the once-weekly weight loss drug

Medicare Part D users with a body mass index of 35 or greater may now qualify for GLP-1 weight loss medication. The drugs, which include medications commonly referred to as Ozempic, work by suppressing appetite through hormonal changes

Dr. Micah Mabe, a medical weight loss specialist at Memorial Health, said the previous cost of the medications put them out of reach for many patients

“The cost has been prohibitive for a lot of people. When these medications first came out, without insurance coverage, it was about $1,200 a month — hardly anyone could afford those medications,” Mabe said. “As a long-term benefit, that’s adding years onto people’s lives, and that’s why it’s so important.”

Mabe said he has seen multiple success stories with GLP-1 medications, not only with weight loss but also with other medical conditions, including sleep apnea
