NEW YouGov data have revealed public perceptions of weight loss drugs in the UK, with an AI Interviewer tool asking respondents: “do you think weight loss drugs are a good or bad thing?”

The AI agent then followed up the responses, gaining more context behind respondents’ reasoning

Public perceptions of weight loss drugs were split, with 35% of respondents believing the health benefits outweigh the risks, while 36% think the drugs carry more risks than benefits

    Health Benefits and Effectiveness

Respondents with more favourable views of weight loss drugs often cited health benefits

One female aged over 55 years wrote: “I think if you are obese the health benefits are greater – they help with joint issues, heart issues, and just make someone who has real difficulties losing weight feel good about themselves.”

In terms of obesity, a male aged 45 to 54 years referenced the cumulative effect of high blood pressure, unstable cholesterol, and poor blood sugar control on life expectancy

    Safety and Long-Term Risks

Alternatively, some saw potential adverse health effects as a cause for concern

One female aged over 55 years reported: “We don’t know what the negative effects will be long term

“Maybe they will be very bad

“We do know there will be a cost to someone of maintaining drug use over the longer term

“This could drive a long-term trend for NHS treatment.”

Others were similarly worried about the potentially unknown long-term side effects of the drug, with one male aged over 55 years writing: “in some ways this is a major experiment”

    Lifestyle Change and Responsibility

Others highlighted the necessity of lifestyle changes alongside the treatment

Another male aged over 55 years voiced: “Providing drugs to aid weight loss does not tackle the cause of the problem, it only tackles the symptoms.”

    Other Themes

Less common themes included social pressure and beauty standards as well as inequitable access

One female aged over 55 years wrote: “It is a glaring example of health inequality – it is shameful that if you have money you can access them and this treatment is denied for most who can’t due to NHS prescribing policy.”
