Dawn Lawry is the owner and instructor at Hidden Gem Spin and Fitness. She described the classes as group workouts on stationary bikes, featuring simulated hills, flat roads and a variety of terrains. Lawry said the studio offers specialty classes like hills and drills – taking on more resistance and climbs, or rhythm rides which includes synchronized arm intervals, and regardless of the class structure they are friendly for all fitness levels
“Our goal is to have people find their hidden gem per se or their inner strength to do hard things while maintaining what feels best for them and offering modifications, if you will,” Lawry said
Regular rider Sheelar said the most challenging class is “Unlock your Gidden Gem”, which involves climbing many hills. Sheelar said rhythm rides are a favorite because they also work the upper body
“It was hard at first, but Dawn really knows how to push us. When you think you want to give up, she tells you ‘you can really push yourself’ and now it’s like I love it. I challenge myself every time I come,” Sheelar said
Lawry said spin classes help build endurance and strength by changing resistance levels, which can translate to outdoor cycling. Lawry added that the morning group is high energy and that finishing a workout at 6 a.m. leaves participants feeling accomplished and ready to start the day
Dawn has been building this community since early spring. It had been a five-year goal of hers and that it has been rewarding to create a space where people encourage each other and grow together
For many riders, the sense of encouragement, accountability and community is just as important as the workout itself. To give it a try yourself – here is a link to their website, or follow them on socials to learn more
