2 more measles cases confirmed in Steuben County amid regional increase

Steuben County Public Health announced Friday that both new cases involve unvaccinated residents. One was identified as a contact of a previously reported case
The health department was notified of the positive test results late Thursday and Friday
One resident began experiencing symptoms Sunday, while the other developed symptoms Monday, the department said. Both safely isolated at home and are no longer considered contagious
Potential public exposure sites have been identified, and the health department has contacted people who may have been exposed. Additional information about the patients will not be released due to privacy concerns
The cases come amid a recent increase in measles cases across the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier
Seneca County health officials announced Aug. 20 that two additional cases had been confirmed there, bringing the county’s total to three confirmed cases, with two others presumed positive

Another case was confirmed in Steuben County Aug. 18, and Tioga County also reported a confirmed case Aug. 14
The risk to the general public remains low, particularly for people who are fully vaccinated. Those at greater risk include unvaccinated people, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems
Anyone experiencing measles symptoms — which include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes — should stay home and contact their doctor before seeking in-person medical care
As of Aug. 20, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had reported 2,777 confirmed measles cases nationwide in 2026
