More than ever, some of us prefer to hang out in our “first spaces,” or homes, which often double as “second spaces” (aka work). Order provisions to be delivered, and you run the risk of isolation and inertia. Urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg, who wrote Celebrating the Third Place (Grand Central Publishing, 2001), promoted the need for time in “third spaces” to maintain good mental health. Community locales “host the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work,” he said. Think coffee shops, gyms, libraries, parks, and even bars where everyone knows your name. Or think combinations of all of the above.

Each of these Virginia venues offers a hybrid third-space experience of physical activity, relaxation, and connection

Coming this fall: Arlington Sauna| Leesburg

Inspired by Finnish-style bathhouses, the owners are creating “a social third space, specifically for wellness to bring together people around a Finnish community sauna ritual.”

Countries Need to Look Beyond GDP

When governments ask people what truly matters to them, they cite things like being healthy, having a secure and affordable home, enough income to live with dignity, and time for the people they love. As the former leaders of Iceland and Scotland, we have heard concerns first-hand.
