Detroiters and visitors looking for fun, active things to do during the warmer months of July, August and September in all corners of the city – even ones they haven’t yet explored before – should look no further than these outdoor workout classes. Detroit has plenty going on for everyone during the summer, and a variety of exercise classes hosted by local businesses and organizations are no exception. From yoga, to Pilates, to Zumba and more, these aren’t meant to be overly challenging classes. Anyone who enjoys an outdoor workout – or wants to give one a try in Detroit – should consider one of these sessions, held on different days of the week in different neighborhoods!
Here are nine opportunities to check out:
Yoga in the Park
Time:Mondays at 7:30 p.m. Location: Pallister Park; 616 Pallister St.Duration: June 1 – September 28
Full Lotus Yoga, in partnership with Midtown Detroit, Inc. is offering free slow flow and yin classes. This class is just one of many Yoga in the Parks offerings throughout the week this summer.The class is advertised as beginner-friendly and blends “gentle movement with deep relaxation.” It combines the breath-centered Slow Flow practice with the restorative Yin style.You can expect to hear steel-tongue drums from Demetrius Thomas while practicing
Detroit Abloom
Time:Tuesdays at 6 p.m. + Saturdays at 10 a.m. (except July 18)Location: Pavilion; 248 Manistique St.Duration: Tuesday class, June 2 – September 29Saturday class, June 6 – September 26
Detroit Abloom, a community native plant nursery, is now in its sixth year of summer community yoga for all levels. It hosts a slow flow yoga every Tuesday, and yoga flow on Saturdays. Musician Demetrius Thomas also often joins Detroit Abloom’s sessions.Organizers suggest a $10 donation
Unwind Wednesdays
Time: Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.Location: El Moore Gardens; 4111 2nd Ave.Duration: June 3 – September 30
At Seasons Market, Mindful Yoga offers a free weekly yoga practice hosted by yoga therapist Caitlin Brown. All levels are welcome.Attendees are encouraged to stay after for refreshments and community conversation
Workout Wednesdays
Time:Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.Location: Beacon Park; 1901 Grand RiverDuration: June 18 – August 27
Led by First Responders 4 Fitness, Detroiters can take two different, free one-hour sessions right in the heart of Beacon Park

Mat Pilates
Time: Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.Location: Joe Louis Greenway, Warren Trailhead; 7241 McDonald St.Duration: June 11 – August 27
Sculpt Pilates offers a complimentary beginner-friendly mat class in partnership with the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership
Zumba Fitness
Time: Fridays at 6 p.m.Location: Joe Louis Greenway, Warren Trailhead; 7241 McDonald St.Duration: June 12 – August 28
The Joe Louis Greenway Partnership hosts a number of classes in addition to Mat Pilates, including Zumba
The Zumba class, led by Physical Fitness with Robert, is “designed to get the community moving” and brings different music and routines each week. Be sure to check out the Partnership’s other fitness offerings throughout the summer

Other Yoga in the Parks
Time: 6 days/weekLocation: VariousDuration: June 1 – September 30
Detroit Parks Coalition, in partnership with Full Lotus Yoga, Yoganic Flow, Urban Solace Studio and LJH Artistry and thanks to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, is offering free community yoga all summer for all abilities. In addition to Mondays at Pallister Park, the sessions take place the rest of the week across 9 other parks in the city.This includes Clark Park on Wednesdays at 6 p.m., Palmer Park on Saturdays at 9 a.m., Rouge Park on Sundays at 9 a.m., and more

Community Yoga

Join Citizen Yoga for yoga classes on the grass with the backdrop of the picturesque Capitol Park.These free classes are open to all skill levels

Wellness on the Riverfront
Time: Wednesdays at 8 a.m., Thursdays at 6 p.m., and Fridays at 10 a.m.Location: Wednesdays: Valade ParkThursdays and Fridays: Milliken State Park, Wetlands AreaDuration: June 10 – September 25These classes are hosted for free by Urban Solace amid the beautiful views and sounds of the award-winning Detroit Riverwalk. This year marks the studio’s 19th season and is thanks to a partnership with the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and Priority Health.Wednesday’s class is Unwind and Align, a “new mindful movement practice,” while Thursday and Friday classes are Gentle Flow Yoga, designed to “improve strength, balance and peace of mind.” Registration is required in advance.
