Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Tom Green County Master Gardeners are helping pre-k students learn about gardening and healthy eating through hands-on education
During the school year, the group provides weekly gardening lessons to students. This week, the Master Gardeners were at Glenmore Elementary School setting up new planting beds for students to use during the upcoming school year
Organizers said the activities are designed to teach children how to grow their own food while encouraging them to eat more vegetables

“The goal for going and teaching pre-K kids about gardening is to help teach them science and learning and how to garden,” Allison Schwarz said. “That’s important to know, and also to help reduce childhood obesity. There’s scientific evidence that shows that the more kids help to grow vegetables, the more likely they are to try them and eat them.”
Organizers said exposing children to vegetables at a young age may help them develop healthier eating habits later in life
The new planters at Glenmore Elementary were made possible through donations to the Master Gardeners during this year’s San Angelo Gives fundraiser
