La. (KALB) -Sheriff Mark Wood is speaking out about how deputies prepare for dangerous <a href="https://healthylife7.com/kotierk-calls-for-nutrition-north-to-subsidize-all-items/” title=”Kotierk calls for Nutrition North to subsidize ‘all items’”>calls, the mental toll the job can take and why training is a critical part of law enforcement work

Wood said deputies never know what they will face when they respond to a call

“I can’t speak enough about these officers that do this every day, that train, that put their lives on the line, like I said, to stand that line between good and evil for the citizens out there,” Wood said. “Sometimes, they get lost in that factor of doing that, and then something like that yesterday happens, and it’s a wake-up call. It makes you realize that the ultimate price is right there, and you may have to pay it.”

Wood said training is one of the biggest parts of the job. Deputies regularly practice different situations so they can stay calm and make quick decisions when lives are on the line

“When you’re going in there, and you’re going on an operation of this sort, and the unknowns on the other side of that door that you’re going into are very sobering,” Wood said. “Adrenaline is flowing like a river, and you don’t know what’s over there. The training kicks in that gives you the control to do what you need to do. Every officer can tell you it’s different. Every situation is different. Every scenario is different. You never know what you’re getting into.”

Wood said even routine calls can quickly turn dangerous, which is why officers are taught to stay alert and rely on their training. He said the department also works to support deputies after difficult incidents by making mental health re

“There are organizations and groups that we work with that come in and work with our deputies,” Wood said. “They’re involved in situations like this. As law enforcement, we see a lot of death. We work a lot of crimes. We work a lot of suicides. We see wrecks. We’re in shootings, and sometimes that takes a toll on the gentleman or lady, and there are organizations that we work with that come in and talk to our people.”
