Fla. (WCTV) – Unused and unsightly, the old Jefferson County High School gymnasium has sat abandoned for the last 20 years, but the county is making plans to repurpose it
The old gym on Water Street has a torn roof, a worn structure and overgrown vines. County Commissioner Gene Hall said they were able to acquire the building from the Jefferson County School Board last year but it’s been declared a nuisance
He said they would have a lot of steps to take before this site can be the home of a new project
More news out of the Big Bend:
“We received that billing from the Jefferson County School Board and we received it with gratitude and you know you can pay like one dollar a year for it. We need to go ahead and have it torn down so that we can repurpose and use it. We don’t have a public gym right now in the county,” Hall said
Hall says the county needs a community center for residents and especially for the kids. He said they’re also looking for a multipurpose center that can act as a shelter during hurricanes or in the case of an emergency
