Eye on Scams: Watch out for this weight loss product scam

LA. (KLFY)– Nearly 200 people have reported being scammed online with a pink salt supplement that’s guaranteed to help you lose weight

Brielle Blanchard, CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Acadiana, said scammers are using deepfake videos of celebrities and doctors to convince consumers the product is legitimate

“They were using that tactic to get people to believe what they were selling was true,” Blanchard said

The videos claim the pink salt supplement, called Lipomax, is a natural weight loss method with miraculous results

One consumer reported they were scammed through a deepfake video of Oprah Winfrey on her podcast. In the video, she endorses the product and says that she is an investor. She also offers a buy 3, get 3 free deal and free shipping

“The consumer just figured it’s Oprah Winfrey, so this is legitimate and purchased the product,” Blanchard said

Blanchard continued, “Our BBB scam tracker has received over 170 reports of this pink salt scam.”

The BBB did its own investigation and found that LipoMax is a business out of Wyoming

“Consumers were directed to send their packages back to an address in Florida,” Blanchard said. “And LipoMax is actually a business based out of Wyoming, so that’s also a red flag that you should look for.”

A spokesperson from LipoMax said the videos are not produced by the company

Consumers also reported improper billing, poor product quality and pressure to buy more supplements

“They received the pink salt weight loss product,” Blanchard said. “But after receiving it, after already spending hundreds of dollars to receive it, they received another phone call from a weight loss coach.”

Clients are often pressured to spend hundreds more dollars to have “private coaching” for their weight loss journey

Here’s how to avoid weight loss product scams:

    • Don’t be quick to trust endorsements. Many scammers use pictures of celebrities to gain consumers’ trust. Always research the company before doing business with them

    • Check the product’s ingredients. Be suspicious of special pills, powders or herbs. Check with the FDA for a list of potentially harmful weight loss products

    • Avoid products that claim weight loss without diet or exercise. Doctors and other experts agree that losing weight takes work and should be gradual. Pass up products that promise miraculous, sudden results without any effort
