PrideStar Trinity EMS recently joined with the family and friends of the late Edge 24 Hour Private Fitness owner Paul Newt to equip the Dracut gym with an Automated External Defibrillator, or AED
Newt suffered a sudden cardiac emergency last October at his gym and immediately received emergency lifesaving efforts from gym members and first responders before he was taken to the hospital. Despite the efforts, Newt later passed away peacefully after a battle with heart disease
“Paul built more than a gym, he built a community,” said PrideStar Trinity EMS President and CEO David T. Daly. “While nothing can undo the tragedy that occurred here, we hope this AED serves as a lasting reminder of Paul’s impact and his commitment to helping others live healthier lives. While we all hope this AED never has to be used, knowing it’s here and that members have been trained means this community is even better prepared if an emergency ever arises.”
To honor his memory and help protect others, Newt’s wife Katie and members of the Edge fitness community, including friend and Atkinson, N.H., Police Chief Tim Crowley and close friend and Dracut Police Lt. Demetri Mellonakos, approached PrideStar Trinity EMS about adding an AED inside the gym. Daly worked with the others to equip Edge Fitness with a new ZOLL AED Plus and protective wall-mounted AED cabinet. In addition, PrideStar Trinity EMS will provide complimentary CPR and AED training for family members, gym staff and friends.
They note sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, anywhere, often without warning. Immediate CPR, combined with rapid access to an AED, dramatically increases a person’s chance of survival
